[opensuse-kde] kde4 configurability
Hello KDE4 testers. I have 4.01 installed on 10.3 64 bit. I keep upgrading packages hoping that some configurability problems on the desktop will be resolved. Hmmm...maybe that is the design? It will be less configurable than kde3?? Ex: I cannot create more than the two virtual desktops. Cannot change the wallpaper on one of the two (to distinguish it from the other) without the other being changed. Cannot hide the taskbar (dashboard??) Cannot add apps to the "dashboard". What is that "thingy" up in the right hand corner that zooms in and out and hides the dashboard? Lots of stuff let out of Desktop configuration and othe little niggling things that make kde3.5 so pleasant and easy to use. Is this it? For kde4?? or is a lot of iot going to "catch up" to 3.5. If not, it certainly is not for me. Maybe it is just me and I don't know how to manipulate it properly. If that is true, where do I learn. You missed all the information on the internet on KDE 4 and 4.0 over the last months? Where did you hide? Welllll......Sven, NO !!! I haaven't missed anything. Nothing at all !!! Not been hiding. I'ved been out turning over rocks and looking continuously. Hence my post which you seem to regard as a rant rather than an honest observation. I've visited that KDE4 web page numerous times and read every blog hoping that something has changed. Let me give you a quote from that page. "To make a long story short: KDE 4.0 is not and never was meant to replace 3.5.x for regular users." Sounds pretty ominous to me. Calm down, mailing list gladiator. Maybe Bob doesn't read planetkde.org or all the kde* threads on opensuse@. Not everybody is as immersed in openSUSE and KDE developer culture as we are. Anyway, the point is the "dot oh". KDE 4 in general is for everybody, both KDE 3 users and people who've never heard of Linux yet. KDE 4.0 specifically is to fix the bugs and complete the missing features and is not intended, in its raw form, for regular users. For one, because in the hands of a 'regular user' and not an informed KDE community member, the missing features can be mistaken for a dumbed down design. KDE 4.1 and up should have feature parity AND cool new stuff.

KDE 4.0.x is just the start. It is in my humble opinion just not fair to compare it with 3.5.x , which had several years to ripe. If you want to compare it compare it with 3.0 . KDE 4.0 is more an Foundation for a lot of new technologies, which is working astonishingly well. It was never meant to replace 3.5.x for standard average users. you mean the panel (the one that contains the open windows and the start menu)?

it is a debug thing. I don't know why it is still enabled, it serves no useful purpose (as far as I know).

I guess you have been having a couple of bad days. If you call it a rant when someone points out that some features are missing to be able to use it on a regular daily basis, then that is your perogative. Ignorance is when people reply to emails with a demeaning holier-than-thou attitude stating that the original poster must be kind of stupid. Why even post those kinds of replies? Read back your original post to me. Tell me that it wasn't demeaning and that it was helpful. The fact is I cannot use KDE4 on a daily basis because it is not ready yet. Truce !! Enough said. OK Dirk, Thanks for replying and your interest . The only place I can bring up "Configure Desktops" is by right clicking on the screen and all that does is bring up "Configure Desktop -Plasma Workspace" and all you can do there is change the wallpaper, positioning, color, and icon arrangement. Nothing about quantity of desktops. Then I go into the menu > system settings > Look and Feel > Appearance or Desktop etc and there are all kinds of stuff to change but nothing about quantity of desktops or the ability to have different wallpaper on the two that are there already. (I work with 4 desktops and they look different so I can recognize them easily)

Yes. Actually I think it is called the system tray or the task bar. KDE4 calls it a dashboard when you go up and click on that "thingy" in the top right corner.

Used to be able to add apps right there, move apps around, hide the bar, etc. etc. I like Konsole, Kwrite, Knotes,Amarok, Kopete, Accessability, Kmouth. I am visually impaired and need big fonts.

Wellllll. you can add widgets and zoom out which makes the screen about a quarter of it's size and puts it up in the upper left hand quarter. Not sure what the purpose of that is. Then again you can go down into the system tray/task bar and click on a little blue rectangular icon which then turns the screen dark and displays whatever is on the screen in a subdued ghost like view. You cannot do anything in this view. You must go up to the "thingy" in the right hand corner and click on the "hide dashboard" to get your screen back.

Well for instance. The Konsole is white fonts on black. No way to change it to black on white. The fonts are small and if you want to change them you must actually go down and press Ctl++. The settings don't stick and the next time you have to do it again. In Dolphin, (why is it separated from Konquereor) if I set icon sizes it is not global. In other words, aafter having set icons and fonts in my home folder, if I change the tree to root for example the icons are small again. And you cannot navigate up or down the tree. Only backward and forward. In Konqueror you can navigate up and down but you still have the mix of small and large icons depending on where you are and what you set. I have a SUSE.desktop icon on the desktop which when I click on it gives me an error message which I cannot recall at this moment. Maybe it is just my system. But I installed it with the "one click install" and have kept it up with Yast on the KDE4 Stable repositories. Who knows?

Problem is that you're very far from being the first to point this out, people have been saying this for months in every conceivable media, (it was obvious that 4.0 would have significant holes long before it was released). And of course it's absolutely true, nevertheless it gets tiresome to have it repeated over and over. Other people have been warning about KDE 4.0 not being the feature complete and production ready KDE4 release (KDE4.0 != KDE4 is the mantra) for an equal amount of time. Telling people to wait at least for 4.1 if they are not early adopters and want feature parity with KDE3. Martin, Everything you say is absolutely true. (Hoping I was the millionth and getting a nice prize :-) Anyway, AFAIK 4.0 was released and put out here to use.To work with and to evaluate. I really didn't expect it to do what 3.5 could do. Well the truth is, that it is unusable for normal work, and cannot be fairly evaluated. With each update from the STABLE repo I had hoped there would be improvement. Noticeable change. Not happening. It wasn't a rant, just dissapointed. Let's see what happens with 4.1 Sorry that my post was tiresome to you. Bob S BTW I started with KDE1.
