[opensuse-kde] [Feedback wanted] Default Phonon backend for 11.2 - xine or gstreamer?
It's currently under discussion which Phonon backend to use/install by default in openSUSE 11.2. Phonon is the audio/video abstraction layer used by e.g. Amarok, KDE system notification sounds, and some other KDE applications to interface with the actual multimedia engines (xine, gstreamer). In the previous releases phonon-backend-gstreamer was the default primarily because of the Fluendo codecs which provided MP3 support for gstreamer. But since Fluendo codecs will no longer be part of the distro this default is again open for discussion. Many, many users have probably been switching to phonon-backend-xine for use with the libxine1 package from Packman in openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1. So what do you think? The KDE team would like to know which backend you'd prefer in 11.2 and if either one is currently causing you major grief or giving you great pleasure. If you're unsure which Phonon backend you're currently using, see systemsettings -> Sound (KDE 4.1) / Multimedia (KDE >=4.2) -> "Engine" tab. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Had no problems with neither of them, but I don't tested them in deep. Any know drawbacks of any of them (the phonon backends, not the libraries themself)? About xine/gstreamer themself: xine - Harder to create closed source codecs since the plugin interface can change between versions - Working DVD playback with menus. But it will not work with default openSUSE libxine. Not sure if this support can be used through Phonon. - Can use VfW/DirecShow (Windows) codecs... even if only on x86 (32 bits). In any case most of these codecs are already supported by ffmpeg. gstreamer - Easier to create closed source codecs... but that hasn't been translated in a DivX encoder/decoder or a CoreAVC plugin. Only Fluendo seems to produce closed source plugins and for formats that ffmpeg/libavcodec already decodes/encodes. - No DVD menu playback until recently. And even now I'm not sure it's possible without Fluendo 19.99€ plugin pack. - Better integrated with Gnome, would give a more "uniform" playback support. But I don't think too much people mixes multimedia apps from both desktops. - In theory can use VfW/DirecShow codecs... but Packman doesn't packages the needed plugin. In Packman both use the system version of ffmpeg libs, so format support should be basically the same. If you can't say anything important about the Phonon backends... both are fine to me, do whatever you think is better. P.S.: after the bad support from GStreamer in KDE3 apps (even worse because of the 0.8 -> 0.10 API change) I'm pretty sure Xine will get a lot more votes than GStreamer in any survey. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I have tested it again. Even if I remember using Amarok with Phonon->Gstreamer at some time, right know neither Dragon Player nor Amarok are able to play some media when using the Gstreamer Phonon backend. That same media plays with "gst-launch playbin uri=file://<path>", so isn't a problem with GStreamer but with the backend. I have even found a wav that with the Xine backend always works but with the GStreamer one works in Dragon but not in Amarok ¿? So... yes sure, Xine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I use the phonon-backen-xine. So I am able to use the Packman stuff for
11.1. So that is my preference.

I've always been using xine (from Packman as suspected) and haven't had any
problems with it, so from my personal experience I'd vote for xine.
A point one might consider is the inexperienced users who just want to
listen their mp3s. Would xine as a default backend make it any easier for the
community to offer one-click-install for xine from Packman?

I think its quite easy either with the 1-Click from community-opensuse or only adding the packman Repo and doing an update. Daniel

I've preferred libxine as my A/V "backend" since I started running Kaffeine, early in the KDE 3.5 days. Occasionally during an reinstall or upgrade I would get GStreamer and it never worked as well for me. I haven't been swayed from xine since I moved to KDE 4.2. It would make my life easier if it were the default. However, this question is about openSUSE as a whole, not my preferences. I think that the default should be the package in the OSS repo that provides the most functionality with zero configuration. If that's GStreamer, good. I know how to configure the system differently. I want to be able to hand out F(L)OSS Live+Install DVDs and have the receivers find using Facebook, YouTube, and GMail awesome even if they can't find me for help.

For me both engines have problems, but the xine one less. I like to use replaygain when listening to Amarok, but that is not working atm with the xine backend. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81661 (comment 90). On the other hand the gstreamer backend has problems with filenames with spaces and this affects Amarok and dragonplayer. This makes the gstreamer backend almost unusable. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189898 (this one seems to be fixed recently, but with 11.1 and kde 4.3 I am still experiencing it) So I think xine is the backend with less problems and therefore the one that should be the default. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
