[opensuse-kde] Audio volume OSD is kinda broken.
After the last update the audio volume OSD doesn't work properly for me anymore. Only the kmix adjuster reacts to my keyboard volume wheel. But when I logout and re-login then the OSD is back to normal. I'm little bit tired of having to re-login after every single boot. Is there any permanent fix to this? Any help is much appreciated. Yes it is reproducible. Every time I boot the machine. 1. Booting 2. Loging into KDE by the means of KDM. 3. Audio Volume OSD do not react to the keyboard's multimedia keys or wheels I have. If I recollect it correctly, you've had patched the kdeaccessibility3 package previously as I had similar problems some time ago. But back there with the next update the issue of not working Audio Volume OSD came back and doesn't work correctly since. There is also an issue of not having the mute option on the main channel of kmix (pcm channel has the option), but I will make a separate thread for that issue. Gnome, however, has no problems neither with OSD nor with the audio master channel. The last kdeaccessibility3-3.5.8 package worked. However I can't find it nowhere. Well I wasn't quite sure, but I thought to remember the kdeaccessibility3 fixing the problem, as Dirk seems already fixed it for us on KDE 3.5.8. Apparently I was wrong about kdeaccessibility3 . Btw, AFAIK it can't be a non-standard user settings issue, because a new created user account shows exactly the same problems. A user switch within kde itself, however, force the OSD to appear. My system is: openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 KDE:KDE3 buildservice Both fully updated as of current release on ftp.gwdg.de. ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.3/ The latest release of KDE 3.5.8 plus *the one* package patched by Dirk worked out for me. Are those buttons you press standard multimedia keys or are they some laptop vendor specific keys that raise/lower mixer volume by hardware interference? I assume that if you don't want the kmix popup but the kmilo one, then we have to make sure that the right app uses the global keyboard shortcut. does it work, when it broke for you, after executing ths command sequence: killall kded killall kmix kded dcop kded kded loadedModules | grep kmilo ?

okay. there is a race on startup, so whatever starts up first will win. we don' really want to support kmilo, because it introduces a heap of other issues. what you're asking for is therefore that the OSD is moved to mix and added there by default. can you file that as a bugreport please so that it is not forgotten? what you're asking for is therefore that the OSD is moved to mix and added there by default. can you file that as a bugreport please so that it is not forgotten? I think that can be done, but I'll have to find time for it.

I'm referring to the device description provided by gnome-volume-control (while on pop-up menu: file/choose device/device description). gnome-volume-control provides fully functional mute for the master channel of my sound card. Because i always switch KDE to open clean (not saving the session) kmix never opens for me. I always have to add it to the Autostart folder, just like klipper. Annoying behaviour but maybe a solution for you. I've closed kmix and switched kde session recovery to user-saved mode. Then saved the session manually and rebooted. Seems to work now. Thanx Peter for the work-around! - -- All the best, Peter J.
