GMail complaining about Konqueror
When I login to Gmail via Konqueror, I get the following "advise": For a better Gmail experience, use a fully supported browser. When I click the "click here to learn more" I learn that Gmail has put me in simple HTML mode "which should be readable on almost any browser" but that some of the more fancy functionality would not be available. And it's true: it doesn't autocomplete previously used to/cc addresses, the "move to trash" combo box doesn't automatically work and I have to click a "go" button next to it to have my option executed, and so on. Do I file a bug with KDE or with Gmail? Anybody else has this experience?
Hi Shriramana,
Do I file a bug with KDE or with Gmail? Anybody else has this experience?
... this is no bug. This is merely a lack of features of Konquerer. I would suggest you use a real web browser (like Firefox for example) for web browsing and not a sort of web-feature-enhanced file manager, because that's what Konqueror is, a file manager. It's a wanna-be web browser at best. As I said, this is no bug but merely a lack of certain features, hence no need to file a bug anywhere. -- cul8er Paul paul.foerster@gmail.com

Wow, what hostility. For your info I don't use Koqoueror for a file manager (unless I am using fish://). I have Konqueror, Mozilla, Firefox, Dillo, lynx, w3m, and W3 installed on my computer, however I still prefer Koqueror for browsing.

Really, when will Mozilla/Firefox pass the Acid2 test? The SVN version of Konqueror already does: http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/1129 Charles -- Sigh. I like to think it's just the Linux people who want to be on the "leading edge" so bad they walk right off the precipice. (Craig E. Groeschel)

Have you tried spoofing your agent to something else? Charles -- "If you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system." (By Linus Torvalds)
Thanks to all who replied.

Does spoofing mean making my agent to look like some other agent? How do I do that in Konqueror?

Hasn't it? I'm surprised. Searching... Confirmed. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=289480 reads this. It's about the Core (Gecko?) so it should be common to both Firefox and SeaMonkey.
The SVN version of Konqueror already does:
Can you please test and tell me whether this SVN version is accepted by GMail too? (I do not have the know how to download SVN and all this techie stuff...) http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=307609 says "iCab (beta)" passes the acid2 test.

Yes.

Either click on the icon in your toolbar that looks like a brown hat or choose "Change browser identification" in the "Tools" menu. If that works you should send a bug report to Google.

I doubt that is the problem. I have't had the time to compile and test the SVN version yet.

Yes, the only ones that pass the Acid2 test so far are Safari (MAC), icab (MAC) and Konqueror in SVN. Charles -- "Linux: the operating system with a CLUE... Command Line User Environment". (seen in a posting in comp.software.testing)

That did not work. Tried spoofing as Mozilla 1.6, and it hung at the "Loading..." page. Tried spoofing as IE6 on Win XP, and got following error: "Gmail requires ActiveX controls to be enabled". Looks like it's Konqueror that's at fault. Let's pray that the SVN version gets implemented into KDE 3.42 soon.

Try using "Opera 7.53" identity under Other... works for maps.google.com also as well as "Safari 1.2.4 on Mac OS X". Stan

According to this it works if you use "Other ==> Firefox 1.0". Also, if Mozilla 1.6 is the highest Mozilla version in that menu- it means that you have an old KDE, you should upgrade to 3.4.x.

Not according to this: http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/1195 Charles -- "If you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system." (By Linus Torvalds)

Followed that last URL and verified that KDE 3.4.2 on SUSE 9.3 Pro and Konqueror set as Default ID works for GMail. Yeah! maps.google.com is still broken for Konq. "Opera 7.53" and "Safari 1.2.4 on Mac OS X" work though. Stan
