[opensuse-kde] About lightweight kde..
Hi guys, some thoughts after reading the post on the planet.. * Startup time and memory footprint, the main point is here ! Load less, start fast. I don't know what can be done but these things are the most important.. * System settings, needs some love. All look & feel page should be groupped. Please, don't hide/remove options. There's no a real issue here, IMHO.. Oh, what about Kdm ? LightDm could help a lot. Some features are missing but I'm sure that for a lot of people is more than enough.. Don't start klipper by default. Who really know (newbie POV) what is for ? Cleanup krunner. Some options are for geeks ;) Daniele. -- *** Linux user # 198661 ---_ ICQ 33500725 *** *** Home http://www.kailed.net *** *** Powered by openSUSE *** -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Daniele, I wish that it would be a simple replacement, but currently it isn't. LightDM is still not really playing good with systemd and things are moving slowly upstream. As soon as LightDM is in the right state, the openSUSE KDE community team definitely want to make LightDM an installable choice for people instead of KDM. I am not sure if we want to make LightDM the default and KDM a possible replacement. Theming would definitely be a lot easier, as I understood. One of the features that LightDM is missing is the support to logon to a Domain (as KDM has). So for a number of users there will be no real replacement. Hi, first step, make it easy to try ! Does not appear under yast sysconfig editor so you need to type "lightdm" for $DISPLAYMANAGER. Installed on my old nootebook and it seems working well.. What we miss without full sistemd support ? Tracking user sessions, and user switching (without issues). Also like Raymond says, some features like domain authentication are not available under lightDM (as far as I know). -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79

Hi guys, some thoughts after reading the post on the planet..
I guess this one: http://blogs.kde.org/2013/04/11/hackweek9-lightweight-kde-desktop-project-up... and more details at: https://trello.com/board/klyde/515be014e9d9a5cf48007e01
* Startup time and memory footprint, the main point is here ! Load less, start fast. I don't know what can be done but these things are the most important..
I don't know how 12.3 works on a computer with normal hard disk, but on one with SSD drive boot is really fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11a25rHT4II That real boot speed with dual core AMD CPU, right after installation.
* System settings, needs some love. All look & feel page should be groupped. Please, don't hide/remove options. There's no a real issue here, IMHO..
There is a real issue with too many options for basic setup. With screen that Jos posted some days ago, it is easy to explain new users where to fix basic problems, although with so simplified setup there will be not so many asking where are those options. As I understand effort, it is about hiding advanced setup options from first time users, not about removing options from configuration. ...
Don't start klipper by default. Who really know (newbie POV) what is for ?
Klipper is needed. It doesn't matter do you know what it is for, as without copy-paste will not work, or it doesn't as we are used to that.
Cleanup krunner. Some options are for geeks ;)
Krunner and a lot of other places will benefit from two tier presentation. Simple for new users, and advanced for insiders. If one does not find some option - click Advanced and see all of them.

But lightweight kde is for not so powerfull hardware... I think.
As I understand effort, it is about hiding advanced setup options from first time users, not about removing options from configuration. Ok.

Klipper is needed. It doesn't matter do you know what it is for, as without copy-paste will not work, or it doesn't as we are used to that. Uh ! Klipper is the first thing that I kill in new installation since ages and copy&paste still work well. Then I kill all apper/packagekit stuff and pulseaudio but this is another story :)
Cleanup krunner. Some options are for geeks ;)

It's for everyone to have what they need, and no more. It will help on weaker hardware, eg ARM, but the project is also about feeling light in use as well as quantifiable reductions.

Clipboard managers are needed under X because it does not store the clipboard contents independently of the source of the copy. So if you copy something, quit the app and try to paste, the copied data is gone. Klipper is persistent and takes over the copied data.
Then I kill all apper/packagekit stuff and pulseaudio but this is another story :)
