program like xearth with kde
Does anyone have success with running a program like xearth in the root window of kde? I've set/checked the option in the "control center" -> desktop behaviour -> "programs in desktop window". If I use this together with e.g. xearth and move an kde window, it is erasing the picture that is drawn by xearth. Can these 2 work toghether? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

You can use any program that can _write the image to disk_. A program that writes directly into the X root window has the problems you mentioned. Background programs usable with KDE only make bitmaps which are shown regularly with kdesktop. Look at the programs already configured there and you'll get the right way. Greets, Daniel

Thanks, Daniel. what do you mean with "the programs already configured there"? - where is there control center? But which tab? - which programs? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Go to control center -> Appearance & Themes -> Background Set Mode to "Background Program" Click "Setup..." Click one of the (at least) 2 programs in this list and click "Modify...". Look at the command line handling and find a pedant for the meaning of those options. Have fun, Daniel
Daniel, thanks for your great help. Not only for this question, but the many ohter quetions too! Op woensdag 12 maart 2003 13:50, schreef Daniel Eckl:

Found it!
Set Mode to "Background Program"
Ah, it is here. Did not expect it here....
Click "Setup..."
Click one of the (at least) 2 programs in this list and click "Modify...".
There are 3, xearth (ah because I installed it). kworldwatch and kwebdesktop/
Look at the command line handling and find a pedant for the meaning of those options.
I selected all 3 (seperately :), left the command line options untouched, changed them (%x %y -> 1280 1024 e.g), but no running program in the background. Logged off as well and as last resort booted the whole thing -> no xearth in background :( Any idea what can be the cause of this? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Ah found it! The wallpaper was still switch on -> overlaying the rest picture drawn by xearth. I expected the possibility to select the background wallpaper just there (the tab were you can choose "no/single/multi wallpaper)... -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Wonderful. Installed xearth a minute ago to test it, but finding out my yourself is the best solution, of course :)

Well, you even can have a wallpaper blended over the xearth globe. I will send you 2 screenshots at your private mail to show you what I do with my background. 8) Greets, Daniel
