thanks for the answers to this question that I received. Unfortunately it didn't work very well, my operating system is hosed from the attempt to upgrade the kde 4.x with zypper and I will have to reinstall the operating system to fix it.
I want to try to install the 4.5 operating system instead of the default 4.1 that comes with suse 11.1 on the next go. Hopefully that will prevent the problems that I experienced this time. Is there a means to do this with openSuse on the 11.1 system?
You can use the procedure to install KDE3 instead of KDE4, and substitute http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/45/openSUSE_11.1/ for the KDE3 repo. http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3 http://omgsuse.com/content/kickin-it-old-school-kde3 Since you're planning to reinstall, I recommend 11.2 instead, since 11.1 doesn't have much support life left, but is much more like 11.1 than 11.3 is, with less beta software in the base OS. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi, I am not so sure I would not go to 11.3, now that most major post-release bugs are fixed. I have done several installs of 11.3 on desktops, workstations and servers none have had any kind of serious bugs, excepting the USB sleep bug affecting USB keyboards - now fixed in the kernel update. I too would recommend 11.3 - at least for everyone who doesn't have an Intel gfxcard. And I wouldn't recommend using a repo of unsupported, barely tested KDE 4.5 packages for someone who craves stability and predictability. The officially supported 4.4 packages are generally very nice. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

i find KDE 4.5 more predictable & stable than 4.4 used to be. judging from other reports in this list, i'm not the only one. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I would second and third that. KDE4.5 has been not just a little better, but significantly better than KDE4.4. There is a KDE4.5 repository in the works that will remain at KDE4.5 (instead of Factory which will move quickly towards KDE4.6). KDE 4.5 isn't 'in the works,' but ready: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/45/ KDE factory has become quite unusable already, being switched to qt 4.7. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Right.. thanks :-) I missed the message that it was done. C -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Probably because they (like me) are using Factory... and Factory has no guarantees to work. The stable KDE4.5 repo is the one to use if you want all the benefits of KDE4.5 (and there are a LOT) without the ooopses of the KDE4.5/4.6 Factory builds. I have switched to 4.5 on oS11.3 since it was released, and can confirm that the global advantages vs drawback ratio is pretty positive. In particular the increase of speed and responsiveness is incredible. On the contrary the major problems I encountered: - Visual effects need to be turned off with intel driver (crashes xorg) - Plasma settings from 4.4 did not work so I removed plasmarc and then recreated plasma settings -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

i wasn't aware that everyone had problems; i've seen a few, and those aren't necessarily related to 4.5--but i admit, there are problems. but then, which release doesn't have any?

didn't look up this post, but if x doesn't start, i rather suspect the graphics driver / kernel.

you're correct, of course. the safest and most stable thing is to go with the official release. i should have highlighted that. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
