[opensuse-kde] improving default config
Heya all, After a conversation with Vishesh, I made some minor changes to the default configuration in kdebase-opensuse, namely the following: * Disabled email indexing by default (email indexing is just terribly slow. Until it is fixed we shouldn't enable it by default) * replaced no longer existing config keys (strigi indexer) with new one (fileindexer) * removed no longer existing config key 'rebuild index for type indexing' * added 'maximum memory=20' to lower memory usage (shouldn't impact performance according to Vishesh, he uses this setting himself) Patch below. Ok to commit? I'd like to continue to remove beagled-autostart.desktop.live and make the same changes to the nepomukserverrc.live file. I will then do a merge request for Factory to also remove the mention of beagled-autostart.desktop.live from the .spec file. Ok with that too? /Jos Diff: diff --git a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc new file mode 100644 index 0000000..9d1b588 --- /dev/null +++ b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc @@ -0,0 +1,2 @@ +[akonadi_nepomuk_email_feeder] +Enabled=false \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc index a144347..328332e 100644 --- a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc +++ b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc @@ -2,12 +2,9 @@ Configured repositories=main Start Nepomuk=true -[Service-nepomukstrigiservice] -autostart=false - [Service-nepomukfileindexer] autostart=false [main Settings] Used Soprano Backend=virtuosobackend -rebuilt index for type indexing=true +Maximum memory=20 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Alin noted that we shouldn't disable email indexing as kmail complains about it and that at least in factory all features should be enabled. How do we do this?

And I forgot to add the nepomukstrigirc file with a key to disable file indexing at startup. This should prevent nepomuk from trashing your system just after login. The downside is that it doesn't notice changes in your files while you weren't there but this is an unlikely scenario for most users. I am these changes for 4.10. For 4.11 we might not want to disable email indexing, depending on what improvements do and don't land in kde git. Moreover, the file I just added is likely to be obsoleted by Vishesh, he's looking for a better place for this setting. /J New diff: diff --git a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc b/config-files/etc/kde4/s hare/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc new file mode 100644 index 0000000..9d1b588 --- /dev/null +++ b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc @@ -0,0 +1,2 @@ +[akonadi_nepomuk_email_feeder] +Enabled=false \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc index a144347..328332e 100644 --- a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc +++ b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc @@ -2,12 +2,9 @@ Configured repositories=main Start Nepomuk=true -[Service-nepomukstrigiservice] -autostart=false - [Service-nepomukfileindexer] autostart=false [main Settings] Used Soprano Backend=virtuosobackend -rebuilt index for type indexing=true +Maximum memory=20 \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukstrigirc b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukstrigirc new file mode 100644 index 0000000..e25c961 --- /dev/null +++ b/config-files/etc/kde4/share/config/nepomukstrigirc @@ -0,0 +1,2 @@ + [General] +disable initial update=true -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Which special version of KMail does Alin use? KMail 4.10.x only complains if Nepomuk in general is off, not the mail indexer only. Will wanted to look into a fix because he's affected by the same akonadi_nepomuk_feeder bug as me before the 12.3 release but I don't think he even opened a bug report upstream about it... :( So yeah, mail indexer off by default unless fixed is my suggestion, too. I will commit.

Which special version of KMail does Alin use? KMail 4.10.x only complains if Nepomuk in general is off, not the mail indexer only. sometimes I get in the compose window the famous yellow band, telling me about nepomuk not running and so I will no be able to use the marvellous functionality... of searching the address book, etc...
when I check what happens in system settings desktop search.. the only thing disabled seems to be the mail indexer... I may have concluded wrongly that the email indexer is at fault.. personally i think that disabling bugged features in factory is not the way to go we would never test them. As for disabling them for KDE:release I am all of it... semnatic desktop search is by far the weakest component in kde. and yes I tried to report bugs against nepomuk/virtuoso... unfortunately it proved a quixotic task... I am simply fedup with replies on the line.. yes it is known.. or you shall not use the trunk if you cannot live with bugs... on top of this... the tools to assist a user in offering any meaningful information for debugging practically do not exist...
