in KDE3.3 the dpi value was mentioned in
/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers
for exapmle for my TFT as
:0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br vt7 -dpi 97
but Xservers does not exist any more in KDE3.4
can anyone give me a hint where to find/write the new dpi values?
OK, so i got these 2 answers: (TANKS to Matthias Wieser and Leendert Meyer) /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers is a link to /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers Same dir as yours, but just with '/etc' prepended ;P The right place to define the dpi value is /etc/X11/xorg.conf! "[...] Section "Monitor" [...] DisplaySize 286 216 (for example) [...] so what is the difference between the 2 ways? i did always the 1st one because it was the easiest way for me to open Mozilla or Gimp meassuring the width and height and getting the dpi-values and i dont know how to get the 2nd values for DisplaySize cause the Googled answers are so frustrating and different so: is there are difference or are there only 2 ways to do the same thing?

I think, you can calculate them somehow, but I always found out by try and error. ;-) Just set the DisplaySize to something, fire up X and run xdpyinfo in a shell. This will tell you the resulting dpi. If the dpi value is too low, then lower the DisplaySize and vice versa. For example, I have for 800x600: DisplaySize 203 152 And for 1280x1024: DisplaySize 322 260 Thomas

This is *the* way to set the display size, but only if it is not detected (properly) by X. So backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and set your value (measure your screen or use the values in the monitor's manual). FWIW, I did this too. AFAIK, it is a way to override what X has found (I'm not completely sure about this - please comment). Cheers, Leen

Just measure the width and height of your monitor/display. For example my display measures 286mm x 216mm. X11 then calculates (and uses) the exact dpi-value. Regards, Matthias
