konqueror and audiocd:/
Hi all, I'm searching for an easy way to rip audio CD's and read that konqueror can do this, by simply typing audiocd:/ in the address bar. With kde 3.1 I got an error message which I don't remember, but now, with kde 3.2 the mouse pointer changes to the clock and nothing more. I once waited long enough and there came a message "file not found" but that might be because I opened the drive when I realized that my system was under heavy load caused by konqueror. My system is SuSE 8.1 with KDE 3.2, a CD-ROM and a CD-RW drive installed. There is no problem playing an audio CD with xmms, no matter which drive it is in. What's wrong here? Regards Mario

Regards Mario Hopefully nothing - just put a cd in the rom drive, type audiocd:/ (and press Enter/Return or whatever) and it should read your cd as wav/ogg/mp3 files

This is what I tried before but id doesn't work.
Or in konq click on devices in the navigation panel, then cdrom which again should read the cd.
If I do this konqueror tries to mount the cdrom which is surely not the right thing to do for an audio CD. And of course this fails, no matter with which cd drive I do this. I get an error from kio_devicesmounthelper that the filesystem type could not be determined. As I said I have no problem mounting data cds nor do I have problems playing audio cds in xmms. Am I missing something? What are the prerequisites? I remember when upgrading to kde 3.2 I had to omit some rpms because of conflicts or missing dependencies which I was not able to resolve. The following are left over up to now: kdeaddons3-kate-3.1.4-39.i586.rpm kdeaddons3-konqueror-3.1.4-39.i586.rpm kdeaddons3-sound-3.1.4-39.i586.rpm If I try to install them I get error: failed dependencies: libkateinterfaces.so is needed by kdeaddons3-kate-3.1.4-39 libkmultitabbar.so.0 is needed by kdeaddons3-kate-3.1.4-39 libkonqsidebarplugin.so.0 is needed by kdeaddons3-konqueror-3.1.4-39 libnoatun.so.0 is needed by kdeaddons3-sound-3.1.4-39 libnoatuncontrols.so.0 is needed by kdeaddons3-sound-3.1.4-39 libnoatuntags.so.0 is needed by kdeaddons3-sound-3.1.4-39 Is any of them required for the audiocd:/ to work? Or anything else that I might have overlooked? Where do I get these deps from? Any help is much appreciated. Mario

This was the only conflict I had upgrading 3.1.4 to 3.2. Jim

Type this in the Konqueror: help:kioslave Charles -- Avoid the Gates of Hell. Use Linux (Unknown source)

Never knew that, Charles! How should I have discovered the existence of kioslave on my own, I wonder? SuSE Help yields no matches for it. Paul Abrahams

Just tried it. I can read the CD all right and I get a list of tracks. If I click on a track, I get a window inviting me to open that track using XMMS. Fine so far. But if I then accept the invitation I get two windows. The larger one, with the title "Play Files", shows a directory/file listing for my wav directory and a selection window, but nothing about the files on the CD. The other is a very small window which I think is an XMMS player, though everything is so small it's hard to make out. Nothing I click there has the effect of playing the selected track. Two questions, then: 1. How do I play the track I selected without copying it to my hard drive? 2. How can I enlarge that xmms player? (Dragging the corners doesn't work.) Paul Abrahams

1. How do I play the track I selected without copying it to my hard drive?
You can't play the wav, ogg or mp3 files. They don't really exist- they are for drag & drop ripping/encoding. However, you can play the cda tracks by dropping it into the "sidebar media player" (it will rip and play it in realtime). If you just want to play the CD, just use kscd, xmms or any other CD player.
2. How can I enlarge that xmms player? (Dragging the corners doesn't work.)
You mean enlarge the fonts? Right click on the player, goto preferences=>fonts. The player+equalizer windows can't be resized, however you can set them to double size with ctrl+D. The playlist window can be resized by dragging. Charles -- "...[Linux's] capacity to talk via any medium except smoke signals." (By Dr. Greg Wettstein, Roger Maris Cancer Center)

What exactly is the sidebar media player? I tried dragging one of the cda tracks to every player I could find, but none of them seemed the least bit interested in playing or even recognizing it. Paul Abrahams

First make sure that there is a vertical column of icons on the left side of your Konqueror Window (if not, press F9). The "Sidebar Media Player" is the icon that looks like a play button, click on that. If it is not there, press on the top icon, select "Add New"=>"Sidebar Media Player". Now I'm more confused. Pressing F9 with the cursor on the desktop does nothing, and I can't find anything in Control Center to create a sidebar either. I do have a row of icons across the bottom of my screen, and at the right side there's a CD symbol that when clicked brings up kscd. But kscd won't accept the drag-and-drop. Paul Abrahams

Click on the home icon and then click on the far left icon just under "location". HTH -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

Now I'm even more confused. (Left-)clicking on the Home icon brings up a list of the files and subdirectories in my home directory. Nothing named "location" is visible. This is with KDE 3.1.4. Paul Abrahams

Open the Konqueror (file manager but web browser should work as well), there should be a side bar from top to buttom. If it is not there, press F9 and it should appear. It usually is between the tree view window and the file view window. Another posssibe location is on the very left. This side bar shows some icons like the icon for the home directory, the root directory, the services, bookmarks, and e. g. Sidebar Media Player. Stefan

Ok Paul let's try again. So you (left) clicked on the Home icon. Up comes a list of your files , displayed in the way you wanted it ( options in the view menu). In the top bar you find >>location>>edit>> view>> go etc, etc. Under there is a bar with all icons, if not visible try to use ""Control-M" and it should come up. Go to the icon on the far left and click, or left click on "window" and select show navigation panel . Hope it works now. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. after your mail I tried it on my system as well. I do know that it worked after my original installation of a SuSE 8.2 with KDE 3.1.1. Now, after I upgraded to KDE3.2 it does not work any longer :-( I checked with pin audiocd and got the answer that kio_audio.la and .so should be in the package kdemultimedia3-sound-3.1.1-13.i586.rpm. Double checking with rpm -ql kdemultimedia3-sound (of my actual KDE3.2) deivered that there are no such files like kio_audio.la and .so in that package. Does anybody know where those files went? Thanks in advance Stefan

I have /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kio_audiocd.so and .la which come with kdemultimedia3-CD-3.2.0-32. A search on google and rpmfind.net did nor produce any results for kio_audio.so and .la. Did you misspell it? Anyway, although the files exist, the problem is still there. Best Regards Mario

I just straced the "kdeinit: kio_audiocd" process which is started when entering audiocd:/ in the address bar and it lead me to the problem: open("/dev/sg1", O_RDWR) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) I had 640 permissions (crw-r-----) for /dev/sg* with owner root:disk. I changed the permissions to 660 (crw-rw----) and now it works! It would have been a lot easier if I had known that the errors have been logged to ~/.xsession-errors: Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom... Testing /dev/cdrom for cooked ioctl() interface /dev/sr1 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM. Testing /dev/cdrom for SCSI interface generic device: /dev/sg1 ioctl device: /dev/sr1 Could not open generic SCSI device /dev/sg1: Permission denied It would have been even more easier if konqueror or kio_audiocd would display an error message on the screen. Best Regards Mario

sorry, I missspelled audiocd, thanks for the hint ans thanks for figuring out where the files went. They obviously changed from kdemultimedia3-sound to kdemultimedi3-CD. Stefan
