what command should I use to start a new session as a different user? I used to have a "start new session" option in my kmenu but somewhere along the line this went away. I want to be able to cntrl+f8 to new session and cntrl+f7 back to "my" session.

Open a terminal with e.g. Konsole, then enter:
su -l

This is done through kdm. In either /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers or /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers (depending on how the rpm was built), you need to set up "reserve" X servers. Something like :0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br vt7 :1 local@tty2 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :1 vt8 :2 local@tty3 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :2 vt9 :3 local@tty4 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :3 vt10 :4 local@tty5 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :4 vt11 :5 local@tty6 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :5 vt12 is the standard. With this, kdm will be able to launch 6 parallell sessions
You need to add a couple of lines to the Xservers files /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt08 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :2 vt09 Also add to /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers Your /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers file should be a link to /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. If it isn't then also add to here. Restart kdm init 3 then init 5 as root should be enough. Now your start new session will come back. This occurred when I went to one of the kde upgrade rpms which took out these lines. Of course if you need more than a couple of extra sessions then add extra lines to the files. Hope this helps Andrew On Sunday 11 July 2004 20:00, Jake wrote:

Now your start new session will come back. snip< Andrew, Hopefully you can help me with the same problem, because I have tried your recommendations but am still without a "start new session" menu choice. I may be making a newbie error somewhere.
Background: I had 9.0 pro and didn't have a problem switching between sessions using "start new session" found in the start menu. I did a fresh reinstall of 9.1 pro and "start new session' is missing from the menu. To the best of my ability I added your lines to the Xservers files. What I now have for /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers now is: :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br vt7 :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :1 vt8 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :2 vt9 :3 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :3 vt10 :4 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :4 vt11 :5 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :5 vt12 :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt08 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :2 vt09 My /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers now is: :0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt08 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :2 vt09 I didn't touch my /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers file, it is: :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br vt7 :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :1 vt8 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :2 vt9 :3 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :3 vt10 :4 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :4 vt11 :5 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp -br :5 vt12 :1 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt08 :2 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :2 vt09 I have rebooted the machine, and followed that with switching into init 3 as root and back to init 5. Still don't have the menu choice, and don't know of another way to switch sessions. The SuSE Linux Pro manual does not tell of another way to do a session switch, just how to get back using Alt-F7 Hope you can help, Brian Jonas
You shouldn't have added these two lines to /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers as they were already there. I assume that you are running kdm and not gdm or xdm. This is important for kde as it communicates with kdm to determine other sessions that can be started. Andrew On Thursday 22 July 2004 04:40, Brian Jonas wrote:
