[opensuse-kde3] Leap 42 - First Login kded/kicker crashes, logout/login again all is OK - Any idea?
Ilya, All, I've noticed a strange kcrash that occurs on first login to kde. It is repeatable. On 'first' login attempt I experience a kded crash (and it's associated context menus, desktop icons (trash, etc) being gone). If I log out and log in again, all it good. Depending on the severity of the crash, I may have to switch to a console (ctrl + F1) find the pid for X and kill it to restart the x-server. Even then, the second login is flawless. Does anybody else see this? If so, is there a bug filed for it? (where are the bugs for kde3 tracked?, I don't mind pulling the source and seeing if I can help) Other than that, kde3 is working very, very well. Just installed the nvidia drivers, worked like a charm. Can't wait to check the build service repos and find who is building compiz 7.8. (I have that for 13.1) Let me know on the startup crash issue and where the bugs are kept for kde3 and we will see if we can get it solved. -- David C. Hi David, Thanks for posting your experience with Leap 42.2 and KDE3. Just a curiosity, do you get the crash whether you use text login (runlevel 3) with startx or graphical login (runlevel 5)? Any messages in ~/.xsesssion-error? Please, let us know how it goes. Gianluca On Fri, 23 Dec 2016, David C. Rankin wrote:

If I understand it correctly, this happens on tumbleweed (or upgrading from 42.1 to 42.2), but should not occur on a fresh 42.2 installation? Thanks, Gianluca On Tue, 27 Dec 2016, Felix Miata wrote:

Because it was happening on all my TW installations, my first 9 42.2 installations, which began around last July or maybe sooner, got TDE instead of KDE3. It happens on my only 42.2 installation on which I have KDE3 installed (host gx780). That 42.2 was a fresh installation 27 September of 42.2B2, but the problem persists through the latest updates and kernel 4.4.36. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Fresh 42.2 installation and same crashes here too. (kdesktop and kded, yes, they crash, but I suppose that the notification of kicker crash is wrong, I experience the notification, but I do not experience the crash of kicker). I am _not_ a coder, I do not know those crashes reasons and I do not know how to solve, but I can suggest a workaround. You can use it if you like at your own risk. 1) Prepare the following script Open a new text file. Copy what follows #!/bin/bash sleep 10 /opt/kde3/bin/kdesktop & /opt/kde3/bin/kded & Save and rename the file: restart_kdesktop3.sh or whatever you like, (remember what), Make it executable. I installed kde/plasma5 because I needed some packages included in the KSC. Instead of picking them one by one I installed the whole session, but I never logged into a plasma5 session. At the end of the installation I logged into IceWM, I uninstalled plasma5-session, plasma5-workspace and I installed KDE3 and MATE, I changed DM from sddm to kdm3 and finally I logged into KDE3 and experienced the mentioned crashes for the first time. Thanks for the explanations. Is kde/plasma5 similar to the old kde4 that came up until at least 13.1? I always install that before installing kde3 so that I have access to all kde4 packages, but I never login to kde4. I wonder whether there will be a solution to the crash of kde3 in 42.2. I need to evaluate whether on a new system I want to run 42.2 with KDE3 or with Trinity or maybe install 42.1 with KDE3. Thanks, Gianluca On Sat, 7 Jan 2017, masigi@tiscali.it wrote:

In my humble opinion kde/plasma5 is neither mature nor good or suitable for a working environment. I discovered some further minor, (but annoying) bugs in KDE3 on 42.2 I do not know TDE enough. Sorry, I am not familiar with Bugzilla and not used to check its pages. Anyway, three of the bugs I experienced are reported already in the list Felix M. has posted above. I experienced a non reported malfunction in kmenuedit on 42.2 When you click on the button of an icon to change it, (upper right part of the window), a new window with a progress bar flowing is opened to let you choose the new icon. The progress bar stops at 7% and both windows freeze. You cannot change the icon obviously and you are forced to kill. A problem exists with kdetoys3/kweather (all openSUSE versions). kweather does not work, not because of a bug, only because it is outdated. The internet adress/service coded in kweather, from which it retrives informations is no longer reachable. weather.noaa.gov switched to aviationweather.gov (the way of retrieving informations has probably changed too, but I am not sure) Regards, Ciao. That's true. KWeather does not work because of the internet address has changed last year, however we have workaround. I have tried this and works good. (See attached file) https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/4zr0bv/weather_report_1120_... 1. Download "getmetar.cgi" and do the dry-run. 2. Install web server on your machine. 3. Go on to "DocumentRoot" and mkdir -p pub/data/observations/metar/stations 4. Add cron job on your machine like this. 09 */3 * * * curl -4 "http://localhost/getmetar.cgi?RJAA" >/srv/www/pub/data/observations/metar/stations/RJAA.TXT 2>/dev/null 5. Add following line on your /etc/hosts. 127.0.0.1 weather.noaa.gov By the way, I have confirmed the latest version of TDE R14.0.4 has been fixed this problem on openSUSE Leap 42.2. Thank you for deploying a patch to OBS! I have confirmed this issue has been resolved on openSUSE Leap 42.1. I have just run `zypper up kdetoys3`. I am not familiar with OBS at this time so that I do not know how to add a patch that way. I don't use any GUI to manage kdmrc. The only changes made here are the several I make with a text editor, including useTheme=no, the same ones made for 42.1 and many releases prior. Other than no KDM theming, I use default theming mostly everywhere in KDE3, main exception being WRT handling GTK. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi David, Thanks for posting updates. I wonder what happens if you have multiple user accounts. Do you have to login twice for each user after a reboot or is it enough if it's done for only one user? I am still trying to decide whether I want to install 42.1 or 42.2 on a new system. 42.1 might have in general more bugs resolved. Do you see any advantage in using 42.2 compared to 42.1? I am _not_ a coder, I do not know those crashes reasons and I do not know how to solve, but I can suggest a workaround. You can use it if you like at your own risk.
1) Prepare the following script
Open a new text file. Copy what follows
#!/bin/bash <snip>
This is strange. After I installed a couple of favorite ksplash and moodin kdm themes. I have been able to boot and start kde without any kded crash at all. I mean -- it is working flawlessly.
I wonder if there is a bad setting in the original /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc that is removed or corrected when using the kcontrol kdm theme manager that strips the original commented kdmrc to one with bare settings??
I'll keep an eye on it, but I boot very infrequently bi-monthly, weekly (or on kernel updates) at most.

Hi David,
Thanks for posting your experience with Leap 42.2 and KDE3. Just a curiosity, do you get the crash whether you use text login (runlevel 3) with startx or graphical login (runlevel 5)? Any messages in ~/.xsesssion-error? Please, let us know how it goes.
Gianluca
Sorry for the late reply, I've just launched from kdm booting to the graphical target. If I get a chance I'll boot to multi-user and configure an .xinitrc and try from startx. 90% of the time, on first login from kdm I get the kded crash. Re-login is perfect every time. I re-ran kdm-theme-manager and the last boot went without any trouble. Strange. If no one else is seeing this, then it must have been due to the way I installed (minimal X, then added kde3 repo and chose the packages I needed). Let me get the first week of the new year settled down and I'll have a bit more time to test. -- David C.
