[opensuse-gnome] 12.2 Gnome 3.6 System Settings won't work
Hi list, I installed Gnome 3.6 on my openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 system according to http://dominique.leuenberger.net/blog/2012/09/gnome-3-6-for-opensuse-12-2/ Afterwards it is possible to open System Settings, but no tool inside this control center window is activated or possible to start. At the same time, is it correct that the previous Gnome 3.x Windows and Application tabs are removed in 3.6? Rgds, Terje J. This should workd and for sure is tested by others already. Can you please start gnome-control-center from a terminal and catch the output for me? This might give some hints. Also, check if really all packages had been installed from the GNOME:STABLE:3.6 repo; (you can try zypper lu -â, this should not show any packages to be updated from G:S:3.6 anymore.
At the same time, is it correct that the previous Gnome 3.x Windows and Application tabs are removed in 3.6?
I think you mean in the overview / Activities screen, right? Then, YES; that is indeed correct. The dash on the side contains a new 'All Applications' item at the bottom. Works for me. I see you have both packman and KDE-4.9 repo enabled. GS:3.6 has in no way been tested to be compatible with other repos than "base", meaning oss + non-oss (and update) As a trial, try disabling all extra repos, and do zypper dup --from GS:3.6 (or whatever name you have given the repo). Does that give you a few more packages to update? //Bjørn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry, still the same issue here.
Yes, I did first upgrade my real-life 12.2 system, from a working Gnome
3.4.2 desktop with additional KDE4.9, Packman and more repositories,
currently in dual-boot with 12.2 Tumbleweed.
Now I tried to disable each additional repositories and run 'zypper dup'
after each, but still the same error messages occured when starting
gnome-control-center and no working tool in it. Lastly I also removed
the KDE4 pattern packages with YaST without any progress.
This is on a Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 w/AMD 890GX based workstation.
And to be sure, I now also have reinstalled to a new, basic 12.2 from
DVD with a plain, single Gnome 3.4.x desktop, updated everything and
verified the control-center worked before upgrade to Gnome 3.6. Just
after this upgrade, the 3.6 control-center was brain dead again.
My current repositories are as follows:

1. Disable GNOME:Apps, adding more repos is not the answer. 2. zypper dup --from GS36 again, after disable. 3. after dup -> zypper lu -a -r GS36, does that offer anything? 4. does zypper inr offer to install any packages? 5. Changing to english locale - helps? ( in order to have working Norwegian locale, you will have to install all -lang packages for packages installed from GS3.6) 6. Do you have unwanted packages such as ndiswrapper, ndiswrapper-kmp-desktop (unless you are using those, but I bet not), remove those. //Bjørn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-gnome+owner@opensuse.org

First, In the meantime I've done a successful Gnome 3.6 update on a similar 12.2 system with mixed Gnome 3.4.2/KDE 4.8.5 and other package repos. However this time on another hardware, hp8710p w/Intel T9500 and nVidia 3600M. Here the 3.6 Gnome Control center (system Settings) works quite fine, just a warning when starting it in a terminal: (gnome-control-center:2109): info-cc-panel-WARNING **: PackageKit version 0.7.4 not supported No problems with use of Norwegian locale or adding Gnome-Apps repo. This sounds to me that the gnome-control-center issue I've got on the first AMD/ATI based workstation might be related to this hardware(?) So to the listed suggestions above which I mostly also had tested previously, without mentioning it explicitely 1-2. The gnome-control-center was tested and broken already after 'zypper dup --from GS36'. Afterwards I added the GNOME:Apps repo as mentioned in a previous reply due to the broken banshee. 5. English locale was also tested, so also adding lang packages for Norwegian locale. Yet, tried this again now, after disabling the Gnome-Apps repo and changing to English (US) as primary locale, and got these output on the suggested commands, and still with a dead gnome-control-center linux-bl55:~ # zypper dup --from GS36 Loading repository data... No, I have a co-worker reporting that after updating his 12.1 x86_64 HP DV7-3085DX that control center hangs. I haven't had control center [I'm also x86_64, but an HP7-6B32US] but I do get application-not-responding in Sound Settings. And audio stops working if I plug in head-phones. Just to add: I've also tried to open single tools 'from outside' of the gnome-control-center window: I.e searched for 'Display' in the search field (previous this could also be opened from the commandline with 'gnome-display-properties'), but it wouldn't open or work properly. Another tool sarched and found 'Details', opened and showed its content, but then hang just like the gnome-control-center window itself and had to Force quit. While my ngome 3.6 installations on two different Intel/Nvidia machines work quite well, no updates so far has has solved the gnome-control-center freeze on my AMD/ATI machine (3.4.2 gnome-control-center works well also on the latter). Can this issue be related to the grahical driver? By the way, here is some system info: # inxi -F System: Host: linux-bl55 Kernel: 3.4.11-2.16-desktop x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: N/A Distro: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) VERSION = 12.2 CODENAME = Mantis Machine: Mobo: ASUSTeK model: M4A89GTD-PRO/USB3 version: Rev 1.xx serial: 106049750000989 Bios: American Megatrends version: 1606 date: 08/24/2010 CPU: Triple core AMD Athlon II X3 445 (-MCP-) cache: 1536 KB flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4a svm) Clock Speeds: 1: 800.00 MHz 2: 3100.00 MHz 3: 800.00 MHz Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4290] X.org: 1.12.3 drivers: ati, radeonhd, radeon (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) tty size: 80x24 Advanced Data: N/A for root Audio: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4200 Series] driver: snd_hda_intel Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) driver: snd_hda_intel Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: 1.0.25 Network: Card: Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller driver: r8169 IF: eth0 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full mac: 20:cf:30:19:ba:11 Drives: HDD Total Size: 1037.0GB (8.4% used) 1: id: /dev/sda model: ST3500418AS size: 500.1GB 2: id: /dev/sdb model: ST3500418AS size: 500.1GB 3: id: /dev/sdc model: ATLASU320_36_WLS size: 36.8GB Partition: ID: / size: 20G used: 5.7G (30%) fs: ext4 ID: /home size: 12G used: 8.2G (74%) fs: ext4 ID: swap-1 size: 2.15GB used: 0.00GB (0%) fs: swap RAID: No RAID devices detected - /proc/mdstat and md_mod kernel raid module present Sensors: None detected - is lm-sensors installed and configured?
