[opensuse-gnome] proposal or repository for branding, wallpapers, artwork, themes etc.

Hallo. I would like to propose a new repository (repositories) for several types of artwork: Branding I am thinking about subprojects with particular brandings. First planned item is the "Example" branding template. Proposing: Branding:Example or Artwork:Branding:Example Wallpapers and backgrounds It would be nice to package popular Propaganda abstract wallpapers set altogether with desktop integration stuff (KDE+GNOME wallpapers, nautilus background patterns,...). Proposing: Artwork or Artwork:Wallpapers Themes and metathemes Maybe bad idea. Could be GNOME:Themes, KDE:Themes or Artwork:GNOME, Artwork:KDE. Technical topic: Some of these project would be completely distro independent. [opensuse-gnome] nautilus trash enhancement

Hi, I wrote a patch to restore trash file in Nautilus in Opensuse 11. The bug uri is : https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=395497 Patch is at: https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=218936 I think some of the current trash behaviors in Nautilus were strange. For example, we can open the file in trash but in fact most application do not support uris begin with "trash:///" . And some plugins Encrypt/Sign seems meanless to the trash file, so maybe we can mask them from the right-clicked menu. There need more enhancement like: view the original path in the Properity page. Set the max size of the trash in each volumn. Where I can found the exist discussion about trash? Thank you. [opensuse-gnome] openSUSE-GNOME BugDay Wrap-Up

Greetings, list! I just wanted to send out a quick wrap up of yesterday's events and a thank you to everyone who participated. In case you missed the message(s), yesterday we held an openSUSE-GNOME Bug Day (http://en.opensuse.org/GNOME/BugDays/20080528 ). We met with the goal of reviewing as many 10.3 bugs as we could in preparation for the 11.0 release. I started the meeting at roughly 0800CDT and we finally closed things up at 1700CDT. In that 9 hour marathon run, we reviewed somewhere between 87 and 91 bugs and enhancements out of our original list of 187. We closed or resolved a little under half of the items that we reviewed. People were in and out of the channel all day assisting with the event as I assigned bugs to people. I doubt I could remember everyone's names who worked on the project yesterday, but all of you deserve a huge thank you for your hard work and effort (and for putting up with the occasional fumble that I made). Hi After all the discussions and bugs, we've decided to patch the volume applet (the upstream one) to run the PA volume control instead of its own one. Also, the volume applet is now in the default setup for the panel, so this should solve the 'I want a simple volume slider' problem The remaining issue is how to best offer access to the nice PA features (like the speaker setup thing). Some options: * leave padevchooser icon on the system tray. Controlling volume is presently somewhat clumsy, it would be nice if left / right click could simply present the options the volume applet now offers: control volume and mute. [opensuse-gnome] QGtkStyle: Qt widgets rendered through the Gtk theme engine

Yes, kids, it is true! GtkStyle[1] is a Qt4 Style (Theme Engine) that uses the GTK+ theme engine to draw the Qt widgets (the opposite of gtk-qt). This means that all of the Qt widgets are going to look like a 100% copy of your current GTK+ theme ones, unlike if you are using Qt3's Cleanlooks, which is just a clearlooks like theme or QTCurve. Unfortunately it's Qt4-only, but I guess that won't matter once openSUSE 11 comes out. [opensuse-gnome] pulseaudio update

Hi Since it's part of the agenda for tomorrow's meeting, and since I'll be away from computers till Sunday, here's a summary: * 5:1 support. Patch for fixing this ( https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381686 ) has just been submitted to autobuild. It supports setting different speaker setups, and from the tests from Bjorn and myself, it seems to work correctly, but will need further testing, so if you have some nice speakers, test them with the latest packages * volume slider in padevchooser. I haven't had time to finish this patch, mainly because I needed some big changes in padevchooser code to be able to get all the sinks, so that we change the volume in all of them. On Sunday, as soon as I'm back, I'll continue working on this. It makes the volume slider show up on left click, like the old volume applet. Another option I've been looking at is to add change the old volume applet to use PA, which might be much easier. * chirping sound problem is fixed, although some of the default values we use now for default.pa (see patch in pulseaudio package) might be problematic for some setups, so we probably want to change them as part of changing the speaker setups. My view is as follows: PC's or Workstations are tools for a certain kind of User / Customer and not kiddie playthings with bells and whistles and all sorts of small pastimes. When I first came across Linux, I immediately decided on Gnome Desktop for exactly that reason. Regarding the distribution I ran in several circles, partially caused by the fact, that some ( among them SuSE thence ) would simply not install on my hardware. After having tried all major distros I decided on openSuSE ( fallback Fedora ) for ease of use an managability. That was 10.2 which was fine with me, except for two issues that were promised to be fixed in 10.3, that's how I got a bit deeper involved than I had at first intended. I have no objections against offering all sorts of gimmickry, but it shouldn't be forced on the average user by default. You like a boomerang that either kills or comes back to your hand. The fancy coloring is for worthless crap sold to tourists. You probably were discussing all that earlier, alas I wasn't around then. Conclusion K* = Windows 99, Gnome-openSuSe = WindowsXP Professional. Hi, This is all about https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373197 Quick summary: for some reason living in X and difficult to solve at the moment, the current default keybinding to switch keyboard layout (Alt_L+Alt_R) does not work and can not work. Since it's not easily fixable, we can change the keybinding to something that works (Shift_L+Shift_R, for example). At least, it will work. But on the other hand, this will break user expectations for users who are used to the current keybinding (and we'll likely switch back to Alt_L+Alt_R in a future release, once it's working). The less worst solution, IMHO, is to change the keybinding for now and, if possible, hide the non-working keybindings, so people who care enough to look at the options can only select something that works. Hi, I've been working on bug 372423 [1] for a few hours now. I originally thought it wouldn't be too difficult -- yeah, don't laugh, I'm naive ;-) Basically, the bug is about a patch that we have in metacity to open the main menu with the logo keys. The problem is that this does not work well for all keyboard drivers, as the keycode returned when a logo key is pressed can change. And it's hardcoded in the patch. A possibility is to use the xkb definition to know what is the keycode for LWIN/RWIN. Here's my latest comment, proposing something else: == So, I played a bit with all this. It's kind of hard to directly use LWIN/RWIN, and it would make a huge patch for a feature that will never get accepted upstream. Also, note that we disabled this behavior by default in openSUSE, and it's only active in SLED. An alternative approach is to consider that the user who wants to use the window keys to open the main menu won't play with XKB settings. So we can consider that Super_L and Super_R are the window keys. Then, it's just a matter of creating a new gconf key: /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu_list. This key is a list of strings, and we can put Super_L and Super_R there to get the same results. In terms of openSUSE, it means we just drop the patch and do nothing. In terms of SLED, it means adding a new key in gconf2-branding-openSUSE. I'll ask on the mailing list to get feedback on the idea. == I think it's really much cleaner, simpler, more maintainable, "lots-of-other-words"-er to go this way. Opinions on this? I mean, with the applet Volume Control you get the volume control slider simply clicking in the icon. Hi, What do people think about changing the default value of /apps/nautilus-open-terminal/desktop_opens_home_dir to TRUE? This key controls what happens if you open a terminal with a right-click menu on the desktop. By default, it opens the terminal in ~/Desktop, but with this key, it will open the terminal in ~/. I've no opinion on this since I don't use nautilus-open-terminal, and both values have some drawbacks (if set to TRUE: it will not work as expected if you want to manipulate a file that's on the desktop; if set to FALSE, it will not open the terminal where you want if you use this feature as a kind of terminal launcher). I am not sure how pulse audio came about in the first place. I am not using it ( and not willing to ) and I think there are quite a few people thinking likewise. This should by no means be a default installable item. It would help probably if there was a discussion on what packages _need_ to be installed by default. Maybe even a decision during install what the machine is going to be used for. I vote for usability and ease of use, not accumulation of all the latest gimmickry. captain_magnus and I were kicking around thoughts on the Network bit in 'Status' on slab/g-m-m this morning. We considered that for systems running NetworkManager, the tile is basically redundant but it obviously needs to remain for people using ifup. So, is it possible to do the following: * With NM, just provide the information as text[1]. * With ifup, retain current behaviour[2]. Any thoughts? [opensuse-gnome] GHashTable speedup patch

I'm proposing that we ship openSUSE 11.0 with the GHashTable optimization patch [1] applied to our GLib. I've been running it for a while, and various people have tested it, with no problem so far. The main benefits are reduced memory fragmentation, some memory savings, better locality and a slight speedup in some apps. This is particularly noticeable in Evolution. What do you guys think? I can submit it to factory if you agree.
