[openFATE 309160] checkbox to enable IPX protocol
Feature changed by: Ilya Chernykh (Ansus) Feature #309160, revision 10 Title: checkbox to enable IPX protocol - openSUSE-11.3: Rejected by (a_jaeger) + openSUSE-11.3: Rejected by Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) reject date: 2010-10-06 16:04:23 reject reason: not done. Priority Requester: Desirable Requested by: Michal Zugec (mzugec) Product Manager: (Novell) Engineering Manager: (Novell) Developer: (Novell) Technical Contact: (Novell) Partner organization: openSUSE.org Description: Please along the "Enable IPv6" checkbox add another checkbox to enable IPX. See bugzilla enhancement: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586119 Discussion: #1: Ilya Chernykh (ansus) (2010-03-10 12:44:36) The IPX protocol is enabled on interface eth0, for example, by the following command: ipx_interface add eth0 EtherII This should be binded to the checkbox. #2: Michal Zugec (mzugec) (2010-03-10 13:56:54) This should be implemented in sysconfig first. Marius, what's your comment? #3: Andreas Jaeger (a_jaeger) (2010-03-10 15:13:33) My question here is whether IPX is popular enough that it makes sense to enable it in the GUI. #4: Federico Lucifredi (flucifredi) (2010-03-10 21:02:38) (reply to #3) I agree with you. IPX exposes us to charges of "Novellization" by people with nothing better to do (politics) and the simple fact is that IPv6 I can see as handy (for some) but PIX is an even smaller audience... we did simplify the installer to make things simpler on the user (usability), adding options back in(especially like this one) is not the way to go. So, given the usability factor and the political vibe this feature would give, I am inclined to reject. an IPX user is fully qualified to turn this on post-install. Any comments on this analysis before i (R) ? + #7: Ilya Chernykh (ansus) (2010-12-30 17:41:03) (reply to #4) + One purpose for using IPX is a LAN play with old Windows games, such as + Battle Zone and others. + Another application is to use SAMBA in environments where SMB over + TCP/IP or broadcasting is prohibited due to virus treat. For example, + some Russian providers block 135, 445 ports in local nets, but allow + IPX. #5: Federico Lucifredi (flucifredi) (2010-03-10 21:03:12) s/PIX/IPX/ #6: Milisav Radmanic (radmanic) (2010-03-11 12:02:18) I'd say the audience for this feature tends to be very small and I don't expect that the IPX protocol will be used by a growing number of people in future. If we do this feature at all, an ifplug script should be sufficient, but a general sysconfig support is less recommended. -- openSUSE Feature: https://features.opensuse.org/309160
