[opensuse-factory] Beta3 in vmware, no screen resize, and no mouse release
Hi, I installed 11.0 Beta 3 (32 bit) as guest in vmware virtual machine. Everything went OK. After the installation, in SOftware management it suggested to install vmware-kpm-pae package, which contains various vmware modules. After restart, it used vmnet for the network card (as expected). X is using the vmware driver as well. The problem is, that it does not resize the screen when I change from normal to "QuickSwitch" or FullScreen mode, as it does if I install vmware tools from vmware (I did not try on beta3, but thats how it worked on 10.3 and other guests). Also, X by default uses the standard mouse.ko module, but not vmmouse.ko, which prevents the "auto-release" functionality, i.e. I need to hit Ctrl-Alt in order to release the mouse pointer from the vm. Changing the mouse driver in xorg.conf to vmmouse solved this problem. Does anyone knows how to enable the auto-resize feature, and how to make the clipboard work between the host and the vm? Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thank you very much for this report, actually, there should also be a icon in the notification area appearing, should this work. What DE did you use? KDE? Gnome? Anything else? There is sort of an auto-detection running to decide if the Graphical helper has to kick in. I'm just going to install a Beta3 in a VM now to tackle it down a bit more. As I understand: - vmxnet (Network card driver) is laoded properly - Graphic Card driver is loaded properly - Mouse driver is not correct (mouse instead of vmmouse) - Clipboard sharing does not work (this indicates that the helper app did not start) There is also a init script that should be started at boot; can you check if that one was started? (check with rcvmware-guest status) Thank you very much, Dominique --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I just installed a Gnome LiveCD 11.0ß3. Unfortunately, on the gnome-live-cd, the vmware-kmp and open-vm-tools are missing completely. @Pavol: can this be fixed at this late time of the development process? so I just went and downloaded the two RPMs vmware-kmp and open-vm-tools and installed them both. Spotted one error: vmware-guest is not added to rc5 startup. @sunny: check the following: rpm -q open-vm-tools should show you that this package is installed. If not, please add it with zypper in open-vm-tools (or get the RPM from http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse/i5... (If you're on i586). After installation, test as root chkconfig vmware-guest If the service is off (as it was for me) activate it with chkconfig vmware-guest on After a reboot, the features like mouse release, screen resizing and clipboard sharing 'just work(tm)' The mouse driver does NOT need to be replaced. The original detected mouse-driver works as expected too. One more question: am I right in assuming you installed beta3 from DVD? That;s just my next test I'll do after I grab the iso. But I'm pretty sure I'll get to the same result. Dominuque, I have installed from the DVD. The vmware-kmp-default was not installed during the install. After the install finished, I enabled the online repositories, and then it appeared as suggested update in yast, and I installed it. It did not pre-select open-vm-tools though, that's why I was not aware for it's existence. I'll try as soon as possible, and will report back. Btw, I really agree that these 2 packages should be on the install media, and even pre-selected for install if the necessary conditions are met. OK, I installed open-vm-tools, and enabled the vmware-guest service. Now, the behavior is very strange - it kind of works, i.e. the screen is resized, but not the wallpaper and the task bar. So, if I open an application, and resize it to fir to screen, it will cover the whole screen, but the taskbar will sit in the middle of the screen over everything. As I use KDE4, I guess this has something to do with plasma. Can somebody confirm, taht vmware-guest works OK with kde3 and gnome, so I can file a bug against KDE4. I can confirm it works with Gnome... Dominique --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Actually, it seems more to be the DM than the DE: I tried Gnome, when using kdm4 as login manager... no go. when switching to back to gdm (what's just normal for gnome), everything works. Try maybe switching to kdm or gdm for some tests at yours. I lose the panel if I change full screen/other views. Then "Konfigure desktop > theme > default > apply brings it back. Then I can change back to "Aya" (which actually is the default after installation) If I change the size again, configure again as above. I have 10.3 as host and beta3 as guest. I'll run zypper dup tonight, we'll see... -- Vahis

You were actually on KDE4 in this case, right? If so, there is a bug filed against it. It's not a bug from open-vm-tools. Actually, all (or at least many) methods of resizing the screen show this issue, like using the nvidia tools, maybe even the screen resolution switcher. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=391800 Dominique --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
