Re: [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed fails to load after GRUB
Ok I figured out where to add this, but it still doesnt seem to solve
them problem. I dont get any text prompt. The only thing that stands
out form me in the text is what I mentioned previously "sed_opal:
Error on step function: 0 with error 16386: Unknown error".
Waiting enough will start the Dracut prompt again. Is it possible to
at least unlock the encrypted partition from within Dracut?

Is this during grub? I've pressed e on the tumbleweed option and entered it in but it doesn't seem to recognize these commands.

I don't think it's this issue unfurtunately, but I do have this issue on my other laptop.
I'm pretty certain I attempted ctrl+alt+f7 when I saw this. I feel like this might be something more sinister

Perhaps you may want to leave a comment there.

I have tried this several times from a fresh install (Tumbleweed ISO) and after upgrading from Leap. In both cases, I have an encrypted LVM volume that contains system-root, system-home and swap.
The machine boots correctly to GRUB but gets stuck at what seems to be plymouth (I think? - it's the loader showing the Tumbleweed background). Usually at this stage I would get a prompt for my password to decrypt the drive but that simply never shows up. I noticed that for a split second I get the error message "sed_opal:OPAL: Error on step function 0 with error 16386: Unknown Error".
then try to boot adding nosplash plymouth.enabled=0
it normally will allow you to boot in text mode, and then certainly have to passphrase dialog box to unlock your encrypted things.
At least it is working here at 100%.
Long time ago I've removed all plymouth related packages, it was causing too much trouble on my Dell Precision M7510 (hidpi).
the dracut shell you see, appear after the timeout of passphrase prompt. so it is quite normal. --

It is possible that you get the password prompt but that you do not see it, because it flowed up the text. Just type the first letter of the password: if you see an asterisk printed, then it is reading your password. If you see the letter appear, then it is not. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I'm not seeing either show up!
It seems like sed from the error message stands for "self encrypted
drive" so it seems like the error might be related. Some Google
searches point to a potential regression in the kernel for certain
hardware.
I might try installing leap, then upgrade to tumbleweed and see if
tumbleweed boots with the previous kernel that came with leap

sed_opal: Error on step function: 0 with error 16386: Unknown error I'am also seeing that since I am using kernel 4.11 from kernel stable repo with my LEAP42.2 installation. IIRC TCG OPAL support was added in 4.11. So I think that message just means

Of course. Just use cryptsetup (fortunately it is still added to dracut even with systemd module). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
