Milestone #4 will not be released - it is being skipped. Why you ask? Because there was a nasty "crash" of 2 RAID HDDs on the openSUSE server which had to be replaced and backup data restored and this delayed matters not end. So the decision was made to skip #4 and go to the next scheduled release. Forgot to add: you can install Milestone #3 and then use "zypper dup" to get Milestone #4. Where do you get a MS3 that installs. I tried build 317 on 586, changed to grub on clean install. it installed completely with no errors, Both md5 and sha1 sums were good. Media check reported no errors found. On reboot of installed system after doing auto configuration, it gets a kernel panic. I read somewhere to stay aware from anything "factory" as the builds are not very good for installation. In fact, I wasted all my time downloading the isos for several builds (last one was #369) but the only one which actually boots properly is Build #318. Eh, should have added that the above applies more to the CDs than the DVDs from what I have read. (I haven't downloaded any DVDs as it takes me 10+hours to download one and takes a 4.4GB chunk out of my monthly download quota.) I read that factory-snapshots are equivalent to isos given milestone status. IIRC I did three separate installs from the snapshot there now, which is M3 equivalent. I've done many devel installs over the years from straight Factory, but I tended to do them within a few days or even hours of a milestone release announcement. Since discovering the factory-snapshots I've usually done from those. I normally only use a full iso if I plan to do several of that version, which is uncommon except with RCs or GMs. The only time I burn anything is a netboot to test for differences between them and simply starting with a Grub-loaded installation kernel and initrd, or Knoppix for live boot needs, such as wiping or partitioning and getting Grub onto a virgin or wiped HD. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thanks Felix. I installed MS3 on my spare disk yesterday using YaST. All appears to have gone well except I cannot update to KDE4.8.2 from the 4.8.2 that installed. Dependence problem. "Nothing provides correct versions of libicu or libtiff. Still looking into that. Do I need to change repositories to get ms4 using zypper dup? Such dep problems are not infrequently caused by package renaming via splits and/or merges. I typically do zypper rm or if necessary rpm -e --nodeps on older packages that appear to be involved, then repeating the failed dup attempt.
Presently have the oss and non-oss factory-snapshot repo's enabled.
Once installed from snapshot one normally doesn't want to keep snapshot but rather use Factory instead. I would attempt to fix it by going to /etc/zypp/repos.d/ and removing each instance of the string "-snapshot" from the files there, then doing another zypper ref then dup, which should bring you to 4.8.3 and as close to an M4 or M5 as can be. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I did what you sugested above and everything worked fine and the dependence problems disappeared. I now have MS4 installed. I have two problems with it: 1} I can't shutdown the system from the leave/lock Icon. It logs in/out and restarts fine but shutdowjn hangs. This appears to be a regression somewhere. I have a dual boot and the 12.1 side shuts down fine. Havs anyone else seen this with MS3 or MS4 as it's been doing it since I installed MS3. Still need to try from command line to see if that works. Will report bug as soon as I do that. 2} My kde4 mail (4.8.3) will receive mail but not send it. Since I copied the config from the 12.1 side I need to check everything. I saw this problem when upgrading from 4.8.1 to 4.8.2 but it dissappeared after a later update. Will open bug on this also. I have my system running with Nvidia 295-53, looks good. When i installed MS3 it installed the desktop, default and Zen kernels, Not sure why as far as I remember I only had desktop installed. I'm using grub apparently. There is a grub 2 option on the menu but I have not played with it. Will look into it. For now I'm using default. Thanks for all your help. I will try plowing on from here.
