[opensuse-factory] M7: How do I remove nouveau driver?
How can I remove the nouveau driver? Uninstalling xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau does not seem to remove it. Adding "blacklist nouveau" to /etc/modprobe.d blacklist file does not prevent it loading. Does "brokenmodules=nouveau" on the boot options line work? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

No, which is why I'm asking for help to remove it. Nothing I try seems to disable it, so I want it gone. -- “What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” - Christopher Hitchens -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

If the X11 driver isn't actually on the system anymore, then the kernel module shouldn't be loading either, so that is strange. But you can also uninstall the nouveau-kmp package(s) (there is one for each kernel flavour) I don't think blacklist works the way you think it does. A module can still be loaded with its "real" name even when blacklisted - to fully disable a module through config files, you need to have something like "install <module> /bin/true" in one of the modprobe.conf files I also think that the brokenmodules= boot option only works in the installer, not in the normal initrd Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You must turn off the modeset. After blacklisting nouveau, I add nouveau.modeset=0 in the Grub boot options. Now, when your system boots up, you can install an ATI or Nvidia proprietary driver minus any error messages. It always works for me. I am using an Nvidia card. -- Cheers! It is in your initrd most likely, check #grep INITRD_MODULES /etc/sysconfig/kernel remove it from there. run mkinitrd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Bingo, it wasn't listed in INITRD_MODULES but when I set NO_KMS_IN_INITRD = yes and ran mkinitrd again it is no longer loading on boot. As a side bonus, I no longer get the annoying black flicker on the boot splash animation. I thought KMS and some fangled new boot splash software was supposed to prevent such graphical glitches on boot? -- “What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” - Christopher Hitchens -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, as documented in our release notes. In most cases adding 'nomodeset' to kernel boot parameters should be sufficient though.
