Just wondering why the factory kernels have alsa set to be compiled in instead of modular. It makes it a real pain to have to recompile and set it to module just so we can try out the latest alsa-git. Is this a oversight as I don't recall previous factory kernels having alsa flagged to be built-in.
This is a side-effect of merging "fast-boot" stuff from Moblin. Major drivers including HD-audio are built into the kernel to boot faster.
I personally don't like this situation, as it reduces the debug flexibility very much. Hopefully a post module-linking will be usable soon later so that these can be built as modules again...

Thanks for the reply, I certainly hope they do go back to module form soon as there are a bunch of people that are wanting to try their xfi's out (not to mention the many bug fixes since 1.0.20 release.). With the way openSUSE 11.2's timeline falls not having a working x-fi for another 8 month period after release of 11.2 would be a disaster. It would be preferable even for factory to switch to the 2.6.31 release candidates just so some testing could be done with yast's sound module and the xfi alsa support before the latter stages of 11.2 development. It is probably one of the most wanted to work in linux pieces of hardware out there. In such a case, just request via openFATE! Without a FATE request, I cannot put any (non-fix) backport patch. If I got a FATE request, you would have already the XFi support in SUSE kernel even now...
