[opensuse-factory] What is the -NET- iso for?
Someone must have asked this before, but I couldn't find it - I noticed that beta4 came with a -NET- iso: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1-Beta4/iso/openSUSE-11.1-Beta4... I was just wondering where I can find the description of this? Thanks. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Its for a network install for installing from a local directory on the network or from the internet. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Does it mean that the other media don't work for network-based installations? Frankly, I don't see any difference to network-based or local-media-based installation. So what's the difference, please? Thx Lukas

The difference is that some people only want/need a subset of what available on the media. So, instead of downloading the whole DVD, they use the network install disk, and only install what they want. If you have a bandwidth cap on your net usage(like with an air card), that 4.5GB iso can hit your 5GB cap really fast. Using the net iso, you may only need to download 1GB of files to be installed. And, there are still some people who only have a modem, and it can take forever to do a DVD at 4k/s. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Okay - but I do that already today just using a mini ISO - what extra functionality does the -NET- iso give me? /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

AFAIK miniISO has been renamed to -NET-, there should be no difference. -- Best Regards Ladislav Slezák Yast Developer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: lslezak@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 960 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ah, that makes some sense - except the -NET- is a lot bigger than the mini? Well, I usually make my own mini of the first 40Mb of the full DVD iso. Still, a -NET- iso of some 150Mb is quite handy too. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The NET isos are as big currently because the build service lacks some functionality while creating them. wip. Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Of course, I know the mini-ISO CD, it would have been enough to say: mini-ISO has been renamed to NET... Lukas

I would like to have a little summary similar to http://de.releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/ that could automatically be shown by the web server when listing http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/*/iso directories. It is trivial to add this via Apache configuration, so if someone could write a little summary in HTML I would like to add it. Excellent idea - I was in fact also looking for something like that. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
