[opensuse-factory] Latest nVidia driver, NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.16.run, breaks plasma5
Just updated Tw to 20160105 and saw nVidia has a new driver, but it breaks plasma5 on my box while 358.16 is fine. I loose krunner, taskbar, activities, .... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

so it may depend on the plasma version. tumbleweed uses 5.5.2 which version does leap use? regarding http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/42.1/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ it is 5.4.2 so it seems, that with older plasma5 releases it works, but not with latest 5.5.2. -- *Rainer Klier* Research & Development, Technical Sales Consultant Namirial GmbH (xyzmo SIGNificant is now Namirial) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
IMHO You cannot compare Leap and TW on this just like that. We don't know how André installed the NVIDIA blob. According to content of ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/latest.txt the latest stable driver version is 352.63, so we're talking about beta releases if a higher version is being used. Furthermore it would be nice if we could see some output, illustrating what is going wrong Op donderdag 7 januari 2016 12:46:11 schreef Rainer Klier:

i think the new 361.16 is currently only available as/with the nvidia installer. and the older nvidia driver 358.16 works on latest TW. i am currently using it, after reverting back to it.

yes, this is correct. i know that.

here is a post on the nvidia forum about it: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/908506/linux/several-essential-kde-... it also happens on other distros, so it seems an upstream bug depending on plasma. -- *Rainer Klier* Research & Development, Technical Sales Consultant Namirial GmbH (xyzmo SIGNificant is now Namirial) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I get no warnings from sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.16.run -aqs while warnings are suppressed, notification of failure is not but on changing to graphical.target, get same background as sign-on screen, not what I set, no krunner, no taskbar, cannot switch activities. I can using keyboard switch desktops and some hot-keys still work, opening xtern and konsole, qupzilla. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have seen this, but sporadically. Not with any consistancy. And nothing to do with subject. I will comment on bug. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Just updated Tw to 10160112 and installed nVidia 361.18 issued yesterday and problems with 361.16 have been solved as far as I can tell :) -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Patrick, Sounds good! Every time I installed my legacy driver 340.93, I kept getting a black screen and "plasmashell" kept crashing. I haven't tested the latest snapshot yet. Cheers!
