[opensuse-factory] General Q - What is the purpose of a desktop folder?
Listmates, In KDE 4, I have this "Desktop Folder" in the middle of my desktop. Before I nuke it, I wanted to understand what its purpose was to make sure I'm not getting rid of something useful. So what purpose does this thing server? Is it safe to kill it or is it one of those things that is required like the old "Program Manager" group in win 3.1? -- David C. Hi, It's just the "replace" for the icons we had on openSUSE 11.0. Its safe to remove this and you can use this plasmoid to show the contents of any folder you want. http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Introduction_to_KDE4 regards, Luiz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

No...you can kill it! I did, because the devs. didn't make a way to minimize it, therefore it's useless on any desktop, IMHO. OK, one can "kill" it --- but how does one bring it back?! Ciao. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi, You just need to add this widget again. Right-click on desktop -> Add widgets -> Folder View http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Introduction_to_KDE4 regards, Luiz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Find "Folder View" widget in the list of widgets and use mouse to move it to the place on the screen where you want it. Than use properties to select type and point it to folder/directory that you want to see in the widget. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

As simple as this, eh? Tsk, makes one wonder why people are having so much trouble in getting to like KDE4. Widgets, midgets, plasmoids, haemorrhoids..... "Simple" would be you have a "real" desktop with icons on it. Not a window on top of the desktop with icons in it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Then I wouldn't have the joy of telling people that what they think is a monitor on top of my desk is really a "widget". When developers start thinking of how a business can get their workers to perform their work more efficiently the desktop will return back to it's former self, a "desktop". Once upon a time there was no computers, and business went fine. Then there was a computer with a text mode and business found the way to use it for its purpose. Then developers invented GUI and business found the way around and used computer again. Business is much more resilient to disruptions than one can think. Back to the factory. There is many bugs left. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

No wonder, they are flying a KDE4 and expecting the same handling as when flying a KDE3. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... He only asked if he can kill it. ;) I don't know how to bring it back either, but then, I can easily live without it. If it is word about Folder View widget, it is there to show useful folder on your workspace desktop and keep them there all the time. You can change size, as with any other widget, but it is not classic window, so there is no minimize. So far it is lesser intrusive replacement for file manager window that is open most of the time to some directory in your file system. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
