[opensuse-factory] YaST crashes during installation on 11.0 GM (Internal Release)
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 # This mail is encoded in UTF-8 since I have to explain with some # Japanese words. I got a chance to prove 11.0 GM (Internal Release) and found a critical bug in DVD (both i386 and x86_64 version) installation process. DVD ISO images, which I used were below: ed6a5b3feb668866df812b1c2aed9d7f openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso 512c8346b0f8eb35f28c4eb96454d391 openSUSE-11.0-DVD-x86_64.iso If I select "日本語 - Japanese" as an installation language at boot screen (using [F2] pull down menu) or at "Welcome Screen", YaST crashes before the "Clock and Time Zone" screen opens. If I select ""English" as an installation language, no problem occurs. I confirmed this problem on my HP Laptop (with Core 2 Duo CPU), hand made Desktop (with Athlon64 CPU), and even on VirtualBox environment. I have not proved this problem would be reproduced or not if I select other muiti-byte languages such as Chinese or Korean yet, but this bug is certainly serious and critical for us Japanese. I hope this bug will be fixed untill piblic release. - -- _/_/_/ To be Happy! _/_/_/ _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto _/_/ _/ helios_reds@gmx.net _/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFIVPO3XnHIfHE6+z0RAlQhAJ999jEyUPu5rtDyDiE4x/xcQpSqTgCeJ6fq eLQ8p+CqvQYHsMBubyUalyc= =cfpG -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

how would this be possible, as the final goldmaster bits have already been pushed to the mirror infrastructure and awaits public release in a short while. there will be likely a fix or patch against the isos or maybe even a rerelease at a later time. or simply use english during install and switch to localized languages at a later date. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

So no one can report this problem at that phase. Again, this bug is critical for Japanese, especially for newbies. For those who is used to SUSE, it's not so difficult to install via English interface, but I'm sorry to say that many Japanese still feel English as a hurdle. If this bug won't be fixed, I cannot offer 11.0 to my friends. - -- □●□ _/_/_/ To be Happy! _/_/_/ □□● _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto _/_/ ●●● _/ helios_reds@gmx.net _/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFIVSDjXnHIfHE6+z0RAtzDAJ9lj6uWNVkAMqiT2J/8wz6A6DutxwCeLl/g clwahMELPPqBPuW0uzrULA4= =52+l -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, at the bug is very weird as it comes and goes. Once we know what's causing it, we'll add it to the driverupdate - or the work around that worked for korean. Yes, that's it. I proved installation with the "GM Internal Release" using other multi-byte languages, and confirmed that the Comment #34 from Mike Fabian is right. "The only language I could find so far where it crashes before the timezone dialog is Japanese." Should I understand that this bug won't be fixed in the "Public Release" and can I expect that a driverupdate for this will be released in the near future? If so, I'm going to prepare a Japanese installation guidance with the temporary workaround -- in the first step of installation, select language except for Japanese and then change locele setting at the "Installation Overview" step -- for Japanese people. -- □●□ _/_/_/ To be Happy! _/_/_/ □□● _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto _/_/ ●●● _/ helios_reds@gmx.net _/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Strange is, that I've found this comment #27 in bug #385172: --- cut --- I think I could disable timezone sorting for languages that I have marked as CJK in Language.ycp (although not only CJK in fact): list cjk_languages = [ "ja", "ko", "zh", "hi", "km", "pa", "bn" ]; Right now I tested with Japanese and it works. --- cut --- I don't know more about the fix but in comment #32 there is written how localization is set for Japanese: LC_COLLATE=ja_JP.UTF-8; Anyway, as it seems, don't~sort~patch has been used for Korean only (comment #21).
