[opensuse-factory] After a while I get "kdeinit could not launch .... " error from Plasma Dolphin
Hello. After updating to the last Tumbleweed, my previous update was in July, everything seems to work fine, but after a while (say, 30 minutes) I could not start application anymore by clicking on the icon of a file in Dolphin. This happens with everything... text files: I get a popup "kdeinit could not launch kate" PDF files: okular icon is shown in task bar but doesn't open and then disappears image files: gwenview icon is shown in task bar but doesn't open and then disappears Same for libreoffice, and even vlc. Nothing starts anymore. Please notice that: - if I start the same application (vlc, okular, kate, kwrite, and so on) from the panel menu, it starts ok - if I start it from krunner it works - if I click on a text file link I have on panel, it doesn't work and gives the same "kdeinit could not launch kate" error - if I click on the icon with right mosue button and use "open with" doesn't work either Everything works for a while, then without any apparent reason it stops working, if I log out and log in back, it resets and works for a while, then breaks again. I checked around and this behaviour is associated with change in hostname, which I don't change, and wake up after sleep, but it happens even if the PC is always in use. Just a few minutes, like 30 minutes, after log in, regardless of the activity. I could not even trigger it somehow, it just happens! I don't even know where to start looking for errors, .xsession-error is not there, logs in /var/log don't show anything. The programs seem to start, but not be able to read the data you want to open with it. If you start an application, and from there use File->Open to read a file, does that work?
Everything works for a while, then without any apparent reason it stops working, if I log out and log in back, it resets and works for a while, then breaks again.
Also if you don't do anything in the meantime? I.e., is it time-based, or maybe triggered by something you do?

Ah, ok.
I don't even know where to start looking for errors, .xsession-error is not there, logs in /var/log don't show anything.
just learned that myself recently: Use 'journalctl --user' for this. No real other ideas - wait for the Gurus ;^> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes it works perfectly. I use it as a workaround, actually, but eventually I give up and logout and login to fix it.

No idea, I could not find any way to trigger it, so seems sort of time based, but seems strange to me. So far the only time-based trouble I found was my SSD, which I *never* trimmed in like 6 years, after about 6 minutes locked up. Probably was the garbage colelctor or something. I don't even know where to start looking for errors, .xsession-error is not

You mean waiting for the Gurus? Or how to open a terminal (as user), type 'journalctl --user' and hit ENTER? (In doubt use 'journalctl --user -b' to only see entries since the last boot) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Which is... ? Looks like a bug number, but where do I find it? Hmm, that seems to be an xauth problem. If that were the case no new application at all could run. If it's related then only plasma/panel/dolphin seem to be affected. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

There are two xauthority files, read https://cgit.kde.org/kinit.git/tree/src/ kdeinit/kinit.cpp#n1470 for the reason. Only one gets rewritten. Kind regards, Stefan -- Stefan Brüns / Bergstraße 21 / 52062 Aachen home: +49 241 53809034 mobile: +49 151 50412019

Thanks Sterfan, I don't think this is the case as I don't use kdesu, anyway it is most likely related to XAUTHORITY, I found evidence mentioned in the bug above, about that old file in /etc/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf that could trigger deletion of xauthority files, this explkains why it seems to be time related too. Thanks Michal, it really seems to be that bug. I'll follow the thread and hope to find a fix, there are already several listed there.
