[opensuse-factory] Pre-Beta Beta comments
I know there is still one alpha to go but here are my pre-beta beta comments :-) 1.The colour contrast on the initial (Splash?) screen is such that the F1 through F5 tabs are difficult to see. 2.Would it be reasonable to have the CD tray open automatically when the next CD is required? 3.Would it be reasonable to link the default keyboard and language to the Country selected? For example: UK > UK English > UK Keyboard USA > US English > US Keyboard Australia & New Zealand > UK English > US Keyboard etcetera 4.In the KDE environment once the install is complete the user is confronted with an open 'K Menu' which obscures the desktop. For me it was not immediately obvious how to close it as the Icon didn't look at all like an Icon. May I suggest K Menu default to Closed. I hope this 'look and feel' has nothing to do with that other well know beta out there :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, that will change.
2.Would it be reasonable to have the CD tray open automatically when the next CD is required?
It might hit people...
3.Would it be reasonable to link the default keyboard and language to the Country selected? For example: UK > UK English > UK Keyboard USA > US English > US Keyboard Australia & New Zealand > UK English > US Keyboard etcetera
I thought this is done already? IS it not - please file a bugreport...

I now realise the user can switch between 'KDE Menu Style' and 'openSUSE Menu Style' by right mouse clicking on the 'K Menu' icon. I don't see any advantage in having a customised 'K Menu' for openSUSE and I would like to see openSUSE startup with 'K Menu' closed in 'KDE Menu Style' for the reason stated above. Should I still bugreport this one? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Check if the first reporter did not do so allready. I was not charmed by the new K-menu first. But now I use is for 2 days and guess what....I am beginning to like it. Will report that there is a delay in switching tabs. It does work quite nice. Try is for some time and you will see that it is not so bad. Should I still bugreport this one? It would get closed as WONTFIX. Both things are done on purpose.

I agree, not because of laziness to press the eject button :), but because it notifies the user to insert the next CD who may be elsewhere in the room doing something else. I have seen other distributions automatically ejecting the CD btw. Cheers, Ricardo -- The goal of science is to build better mousetraps. I object - the tray might need attention for opening, just imagine your CD medium dropping off your drive, because you have your CD vertically. Or your computer case has a (closed) door in front of the CD drive. We might add a "automatically eject" checkbox in the "please insert CD x" popup which is initially off. Good point. What about just making a system beep then? It is of short duration, but if the person is somewhere next to the computer, he would hear it. We would just need to add a UI::Beep() method to Yast and call it from there. While reading the first CD, we have plenty of time to present the user with a choice: eject, beep, popup, explode. If he has not chosen before the CD is done, default to 'popup', and keep the choice on screen. cheers, Jw. -- o \ Juergen Weigert paint it green! __/ _=======.=======_ <V> | jw@suse.de wide open suse_/ _---|____________\/ \ | 0911 74053-508 (tm)__/ (____/ /\ (/) | __________________________/ _/ \_ vim:set sw=2 wm=8 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Good idea. One thing, auto-eject still needs the window to popup. I also think it's kinda of dumb to make an option for "beep when a new cd is requested". So, we just need some "Automatically eject the cd when over" radio button there. The beep would not be configurable. Agree? Cheers, Ricardo

No, no, no. Only appropiate when doing the install on location in a buddist monastary. Installation sites are often noisy rooms, making "more noise" hardly usefull. Just as unhelpfull as a pop-up window, when your console is kvm-switched to another machine ;-) Leave the noise making to the managers, they are paid for that job! -- pgp-id: 926EBB12 pgp-fingerprint: BE97 1CBF FAC4 236C 4A73 F76E EDFC D032 926E BB12 Registered linux user: 75761 (http://counter.li.org) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You don't actually stand in a server room while installing, do you? This is what ssh or vnc is for But about the options, what's wrong with choice? What Klaus suggested (optional checkbox, default: off) is the best solution. -- pgp-id: 926EBB12 pgp-fingerprint: BE97 1CBF FAC4 236C 4A73 F76E EDFC D032 926E BB12 Registered linux user: 75761 (http://counter.li.org) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

What Klaus suggested (optional checkbox, default: off) is the best solution.
I'd say, that's just featuritis. It's not needed for a DVD installation nor for a network installation. Most "real" users do not install that often--so this new feature would make life more complicate for them. -- Karl Eichwalder R&D / Documentation SUSE Linux Products GmbH GPG: 1024D/06EB882E B2A3 AF2F CFC8 40B1 67EA 475A 5903 A21B 06EB 882E --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

+1 See "Mockups: Installation openSUSE 10.x by Azerion" - do not show options that are not used by the mainstream (80%) and the user should not know of. More options is more confusing. However, the checkbox could be included in the advanced part. But that is only a plan if we are gonna redesign openSUSE installation (my way :P ) Azerion --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
