I wonder how much network bandwidth texlive is consuming around the globe needlessly, and just how many packages the bloody thing is hooked into as a recommended tag-along bandwidth leech. I know it's wired up to asciidoc and xmlto, as I had to change zypp/zypper configs to avoid having to download the whole pile in order to have those two packages that I do need. I first made texlive taboo, but that turned yast into a slug. Is there some other way to ban this monstrosity? -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

This is an year-old, serious bug in zypper IMHO. Having too much taboo tags reduces the speed of zypper and/or yast by a factor of 20 or more! Is there a tracker issue for this? I wonder what the problems are to fix this...

I use http://www.ctan.org/pkg/texlive-dummy-opensuse since I have TeXLive installed directly. Werner -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks. Unfortunately, zypper dup wasn't placated. The following package is going to be REMOVED: texlive-dummy 1477 new packages to install, 1 to remove. Overall download size: 627.4 MiB. Already cached: 0 B After the operation, additional 1007.3 MiB will be used. Continue? Ah, I don't use `dup', only `up', so I can't help here. But may others can assist or suggest work-arounds. Werner -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It solved half of it, so thanks a bunch. I can work around the rest. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

My approach is to use 'sudo zypper up' first. After it finishes, I then enter 'sudo zypper dup', and look carefully at what changes it proposes. In my vanilla setup, so far only package deletions have been have been suggested. All of those have been allowed with no problems. retry with "zypper dup --no-recommends", might give you a much smaller footprint. If that helps, "installRecommends = no" in /etc/zypp/zypper.conf is your friend. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, that's what I did. I usually want recommended packages.. but forevermore downloading a ZILLION unused packages is a tad extreme :-/ -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
