[opensuse-factory] Firefox under TW
Dear all, I notice the last few days that firefox has developed an appetite for memory. Starting FF with one page uses between 650-750 MB, with three pages It is using already 1.7+GB!! Yesterday I had around 5-6 pages with a memory consumption of 3.5 GB!! This is of course ridiculous and starts me thinking of using another, more modest, browser. So, what is going on? First, how do you check this? about:memory? Or any other way? Mine is currently at 307MB (which is actually quite low and I'm surprised ;-)) Next: Which version of Firefox on which openSUSE version? NextNext: is multi process turned on? With how many content processes? Could be some extension that recently updated itself? The firefox version in TW is still 52.X ESR so I would be surprised if there was some minor security update that suddenly started to eat memory that much.

Consider switching to version 56 from the mozilla factory repo. I did that just few days ago (because of CPU usage and general sluggishness, not RAM), and it's really a big difference. Upcoming 57 should be even better. Yeah there is the downside with "legacy extensions" which still work in 56 but will stop working in 57, so depends if you use any and sacrifice this. And IIUC starting the 56 version will convert your profile so you can't go back to 52, so consider a backup first. In any case I hope that TW will switch to 56+ soon, it's a shame that rolling distro is stuck on year old version... Vlastimil

I can also confirm that previous versions of Firefox used to eat up a
huge amount of memory for me. I think this is related to early
implementations of Electrolysis (multiprocess firefox). Latest
versions of Firefox do not have this issue (I am currently running
Nightly)

I have found that the combination of add-ons SiteDelta and No-Script is a very hungry combination. I disabled SiteDelta and now the consumption is limited to 300-400 MB. So, it was not Firefox, but SiteDelta who can't work properly with No-Script. Another one that makes memory usage go high is addblockplus, and possibly all similar addons. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Another one that makes memory usage go high is addblockplus, and possibly all similar addons.
This was documented and widely-discussed a few years ago. https://lifehacker.com/adblock-plus-once-again-found-to-dramatically-increas... This Just In: AdBlock Plus Still Uses a Lot of Memory 5/14/14 1:30pm Around that time, I switched to uBlock Origin. After a short experimental period, I switched all my machines and those of many friends and clients. https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock Beware -- *not* uBlock, an old, unmaintained fork. https://www.ublock.org/ The other alternative is to install Privoxy and configure your system proxy to go through it. It does not do such a thorough job but it takes little in the way of resources. It's in the TW repos. https://www.privoxy.org/ Set your proxy server to localhost:8118 and you're done. To test, access privoxy.org/config -- it intercepts this URL and displays a locally-generated status page. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o. I have replaced Firefox in the repos with Firefox Nightly. The speed improvement is absurdly good. You may want to give it a shot if you can find replacement for your essential extensions.
