[opensuse-factory] Contrib: Progress
Hi all, Both contrib wiki page and the candidate packages wiki page are growing rapidly, which is a good sign. Links: http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib/packages However, We still haven't really started. I think we should. There is one open question: contrib-updates.
What about updates for single packages in that repository? If the repository is frozen after the release, we need an additional repository just for packages containing bugfixes and security fixes. Who will maintain this additional repository? Who will review the packages submitted there? Should there be patches like for the official openSUSE packages available?
I would prefer to keep updates to the minimum - only critical bugfixes and critical security fixes. As for distribution - I don't know if we need a separate branch for updates, but I think yes, having separate branch for updates is a good idea. Not sure what we will implement. Any ideas on this should be handled? -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Any ideas on this should be handled? I don't think it should be frozen 100%, but kept updated for bugfixes only

The buildservice can't generate patches (yet).

Ack.

The downside of a separate repository is that users need to be aware of it and subscribe both repositories, otherwise they won't receive security updates. I think the following should work: When freezing the repository, add <publish><disable/></publish> to the project metadata, and when updating a single package, add <publish><enable/></publish> to the metadata of that package. That should hopefully recreate the repo with that single package updated (if it doesn't work, we need to fix the buildservice ;-)). That's a good thing to add ;-)

Yes, I think patch level, security/functionality upgrades should be allowed.

Atm I suggest we dont use a separate repository for security fixes, that will just complicate things, let's have a working set of packages first, then evaluate the real need for such thing. Good news: Now we have a Reviewer's (board/committee). We now have 3 reviewers in team: (!) -me (Alexey Eromenko "Technologov") -Michal Marek (mmarek) -Pascal Bleser (yaloki) This is the fair minimum required to vote on decisions. Next stage: Let's start reviewing packages. Additionally, if we can't review the package quickly (in 1 conversation), we will make a wiki page in contrib, with proper intermediate review results for a specific package. Maybe we need also a wiki page for final review results. What do you think ? Example package review: =============================================== "iperf" - IP Performance benchmark Description: Iperf is a tool to measure maximum TCP bandwidth, allowing the tuning of various parameters and UDP characteristics. Iperf reports bandwidth, delay jitter, datagram loss. This package is in OBS. Current maintainer: James Oakley (James also interested in contributing to "contrib" repo, so he may become a package maintainer) Alternative maintainer: me (Alexey Eromenko "Technologov") (if James don't wan't or can't support his child package) URL : http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/ URL 2 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/iperf License: custom OSS-compatible, BSD-like (http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/ui_license.html) Latest update: v2.0.4 Apr 2008 (which means, that package is maintained) OBS URL: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jimfunk/openSUSE_11.0/src/ Testing: Package received some testing from me. Everything tested found to work. No crashes. =============================================== 1. What do you think of the review process 2. No offense, but do you have enough packaging experience ? I dont think so ;)
This is the fair minimum required to vote on decisions.
Next stage: Let's start reviewing packages.
Not really.. it is just too soon to start .. -- "A computer is like an Old Testament god, with a lot of rules and no mercy. " Cristian Rodríguez R. Platform/OpenSUSE - Core Services SUSE LINUX Products GmbH Research & Development http://www.opensuse.org/
No offense, but do you have enough packaging experience ? I dont think so ;) No. That's why I will mostly work on simple packages :) But I do have some good experience in BETA-testing and catching bugs... I take on a job I can handle.
The people who want complex packages in "contrib" will have to maintain them. Now, if you look in candidates page: "http://en.opensuse.org/Contrib/packages" You will see that most packages are of little-to-medium difficulty. For now we don't have too much packages in the list, that can be considered _complex_. We will have complex packages in the future, sure, but then we also have skilled packagers on the "contrib" list of interested users.

Then we are in a problem :( Of course we can ask help from Novell guys (AJaeger or Coolo), but I prefer not to take their time (unless really necessary). I hope you are kidding.. even or unvene numbers have nothing to do with democracy, voting or whatever,, anyway Im not sure voting is the right solution.. -- "A computer is like an Old Testament god, with a lot of rules and no mercy. The main idea behind this, is that uneven number will allow us to agree on problematic packages. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
