[opensuse-factory] Enhancement #399239 - feedback
Hi all Anyone interested to YaST enhancement #399239 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399239) ? "YaST's software installation modules should show disk space modification" - reporting disk usage variation *before* the actual installation / removal starting. Any comment? Hi,
Would be nice if YaST (Software Manager) shows the download size
instead of the installed size when downloading packages, just like
zypper does...

Luiz

Hi :)
Anyone interested to YaST enhancement #399239 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399239) ? "YaST's software installation modules should show disk space modification" - reporting disk usage variation *before* the actual installation / removal starting. Any comment?
Yes! It is not 100% true that sw_single and online_update does not show how much additional disk space will be used after downloading selected packages/patches. Ncurses version of online_update client does - it is the 'Total download size' bit under the table listing patches. I somehow dropped that bit out when redesigning ncurses version of sw_single (http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Pkger-main.png) for 11.0. It can certainly come back - any idea where would be a suitable place to display it? Under the package table (just like patch selector does it)? There's a label with currently selected package name, but it's pretty much redundant. Another option would be to display this information in the text fields once users selects 'Installation summary' filter, as somebody proposed in the above bugzilla ticket. Both solutions are pretty simple and fit current concept of ncurses pkg selector nicely. Unfortunately, all these applies to ncurses-pkg only, I can't fix Qt package selector for you ... Hi! I'm the original proposer of the enhancement but it is a common idea with other commentators (robertmann and andrea martin) of the bug report.
I've seen the image (with some difficulty, because servers are quite busy. It's the download day...) and I've noted that you have space between the filter frame and the description frame below it. If you use "Disk usage variation: " label, respect to the linked image you have eleven available characters to add the actual variation size before to reach the "Package" label. I think it is enough, because I'm quite sure that at most nine characters can be used (for example, -123.4 Kb). You can recover also another character between the two informations if you shift the "Package" label one place on the right. In my opinion, it is better to apply the above shift even if no modifications are made to the layout, because the current placement seems to me to be not aligned with other components. But, I repeat, this is only my opinion. Another place is between the Package description frame and Cancel and Accept "buttons". If you put this information here, first you have no problems about spaces and second -and more important- you are sure that the user sees it when (s)he wants to accept or cancel modifications. You can also complete the information provided by this line with the overall download size. Alternatively, I agree with you that you can replace the currently selected package label with the one about disk usage variation. I think it is redundant because the package name is highlighted inside the package table and also (usually) repeated inside the description frame. But I think also it can be quite strange to see a disk usage between packages and package descriptions. My preferences are (in order): above Close and Accept button; below filter frame; instead of current Package label.
Unfortunately, all these applies to ncurses-pkg only, I can't fix Qt package selector for you ...
I think that if it is shown that it is possible to add such information, then also some Qt programmer will try to apply these modifications. Or, at least, I hope it :-) Regards, Andrea --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
