[opensuse-factory] How to name that 'thing' ?
Hi, looking at http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Management#Package_source_directories_on_the_... it seems that there is no agreement on how to name a 'software repository', 'installation source', 'catalog', 'channel', whatever ;-) I'm hereby asking the community to come forward with a proposal for a proper name. Let's call them repositories (or repos among friends). There would be rpm repos holding rpm files. Then there would be installation repos. Third party installation repos/rpm repos depending whether they carry just rpm or also installation repodata. What will we do with repodata if there are no repos, anyway? Installation services (service list, sl) and catalogs are confusing for someone already familiar with SUSE naming convention. New users will easily pick repos. Installation service sounds to me like a server side service kinda what the other OS has. Sources are not that good either because newbies want nothing from source, they are afraid of source and command line. Let's keep source codes as sources and installation repos as repos and let's not add any "services" Channels are from Smart, not from SUSE, let's not start call everything Channels. -- Vahis Sometimes I reply to top posters. Repos for the cli, to be stretched out to repositories in GUI tools. Catalog is for describing what a repo holds. Channel is not a smart choice of name. ;-) -- "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven." Matthew 5:12 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. Installation Source is any medium that contains one or more installable Software Packages. Software Repository is sorted collection of Software Packages (rpm, deb, tar.gz, etc). Catalog is describing repository content. (Felix Miata) Channel would be communication way, like protocol and server to reach some destination like Software Repository. Is this would be appropriate as a naming schema? Please see http://en.opensuse.org/Software_Vocabulary and edit as appropriate. -- Regards, Rajko M. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
