Re: [opensuse-factory] FF 7.0 (was: Are there plans for changing the default browser?)
Running Aurora under openSUSE 11.4 right now, once again release early & release often, seems to be working! "Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 7 into the Aurora Channel. According to the release notes, the latest developer preview is "focused on delivering performance enhancements and optimizing memory utilization", addressing a problem that long-time users of the open… " So the main issues I have with the alpha is my oxygen-gtk theme not being picked up and flash-plugin, undoubtedly my faulty configuration. To my surprise the biggie plugins NoScript, Adblock Plus & WoT are already cleared and working (also HashColouredTabs+). Not bad considering release was announced July 7th - http://blog.mozilla.com/futurereleases/2011/07/07/firefoxaurora7/ Think ppl are likely to complain about lack of user visible changes, I'm finding it very familiar despite the alien GTK look, of Mozzila's 32 bit download. Thread in forum for feedback & share time saving tips, like how to get the download started - http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-releas... So far FF4 brought in UI changes, which are nice once you get used to it. Since then it seems mostly bug fixes and performance improvements, with Add On ppl even supporting the Alphas. Bit boring & non-buggy so far! Rob -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thanks! More on plugins.. on the beta - FF6 it scored 17/20, Java Console not enabled, MD5 Reborned (replaced with alternative) & Download Helper. So it seems like in general Add On authors are keeping up for most part with the regular small changes. The beta was out just on Friday. Not having Java Console is a feature.. right? :) The about:memory page (lets you trigger Garbage Collection & a Minimise Memory usage button), Navigation timing stuff is cool. http:// vanishes and the site like "google.com" or "opensuse.org" is highlighted with rest of URL faded. And a cool touch for web designers is the "..." possibility for over-flowing text. q: FF crisis? a: Wot Crisis!!! This looks like it'll should be a good improvement for the "Beta" M6 - "Faster, sleeker, better..." Once other users try it out, it should resolve this issue about default browsers. Yes? Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I think so. After some rethinks, it doesn´t make sense to switch to Iceweasel, and the other alternatives aren´t so much better then Firefox, so I think it makes the most sense that we stay with Firefox even if they continue their idiotic and ridiculous version scheme. :-) kind regards -- Kim Leyendecker (kdl@k-dl.de.vu) openSUSE Ambassador, openSUSE Wiki Team DE HAVE A LOT OF FUN! http://www.opensuse.org Have you tried SUSE Studio? I don´t think so, because a distribution is something *really* different than a webbrowser. It starts, that a webbrowser (as a normal piece of software) can change and broke up things with every release that deserves a major version higher. Into a distribution, there´s a continuous way of evolution. thanks -- Kim Leyendecker (kdl@k-dl.de.vu) openSUSE Ambassador, openSUSE Wiki Team DE HAVE A LOT OF FUN! http://www.opensuse.org Have you tried SUSE Studio? I agree about Iceweasel. In practicality, compared to the alternatives Firefox is the wag to go. I like Google Chrome but Firefox has the support of many more extension and theme developers. I vote to keep Firefox as the default browser for openSUSE 12.1. Cheers! Install oxygen-gtk-32bit, that should help the theming. :) For Flash, it should pick up the one installed from the non-oss rpm (that a 32bit Flash, AFAIK, and 32bit browsers need 32bit plugins). Alternatively, Mozilla actually has 64bit builds, but you need to look directly at the FTP servers to find them, they are probably not linked from download pages.
