Mostly zypper is good, but it has a habit that I would hugely like to see gone that I can't find a way to avoid it in its man page: Does not preserve timestamps of files it downloads Provides no discoverable option to preserve timestamps of files it downloads This is precisely why I use wget to fetch files from the internet instead of letting those awful automatic things work just by arriving on a download page in a web browser without an extension to preserve timestamps, and why every time I use cp I also use -a. If all its attributes aren't preserved, it's not the same file, and screws with backup/restore operations, among other problems caused. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Yuk! I thought zypper downloaded without outside help. There was no 'libwget' so libcurl was used. This decission was made in the early stages of libzypp / zypper. And zypper already has some age on it now (OSS 10.2 was the first release with zypper) See also: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2006-11/msg00284.html http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Libzypp - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Neither Aria2 at that point? The only page I found dating it was in Japanese.

Compared to Yum, URPMI & (AFAIK) Apt-Get, Zypper is quite the junior.

urpmi.cfg allows to contain: curl-options: --remote-time It works. A corresponding zypp option is proving elusive. e.g. man zypp.conf -> No manual entry for zypp.conf. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." aria2 was used at some point, IIRC. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

This is not true, zypp is today the most complete package manager in the linux world, none of the other alternatives match it. YUM is deprecated.. its successor called DNF adopts parts of the SUSE package manager stack.. for unknown reasons redhat decided to only takes parts of it, which is a a level of stupid that can only be the product of the mind of some manager or bureaucrat. it boggles the mind of anyone slightly aware of the effort it takes to make things work. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

This is not true,
It absolutely is: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/junior?s=t "jun·ior [joon-yer]... adjective 1. younger..."

Absolutely... https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/eCS-Technical/conversations/messages/191... ... ...but competence has absolutely nothing here to do with age. Zypper does indeed have some niggles keeping it short of perfection.

Yes, there was a time where one could select between aria2 and curl. No longer.

Editing that file has been mentioned often as a possible solution for some weird problems with zypper, now and then. It would be a pitty if it is ignored. No, actually making zypper to download without help of other components will be a colossal waste money and developer time. libcurl is the sanest and most complete C library to use for this task currently available. There is nothing wrong with curl either, it is just what you want to do is: a) to rely on the presence of a particular minor implementation detail. b) ..that not implemented..and c) not required to be implemented for the package manager to work. -- Cristian "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

That said.. nothing can be lost if you actually ask Michael Andres to implement this particular detail, though he might need a good reason to. The last modified date comes in the http headers, other info might be available in the rpm metadata.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
