[opensuse-factory] Packaging Debian tools for openSUSE
Hi.
I package some development tools from Debian for SUSE to be able to
easily build deb packages on SUSE (both SLES and openSUSE). I'm
currently in the process of trying to add them to Factory, so I just
wanted to post a short introduction of the packages I work on:
debootstrap (devel:tools/debootstrap) is a small tool to build Debian
and Ubuntu chroots from scratch. It is very stable and only requires
small updates to be adapted to new Debian and Ubuntu releases. It is
my very first package I try to get into Factory.
pbuilder (home:flichtenheld/pbuilder so far) is a tool similar to
"build" in openSUSE to build deb packages in chroots. I'm aware that
"build" can also build deb packages but as native tool, pbuilder is
much more comfortable to use for debs. It requires debootstrap for the
chroot setup. I plan to submit this package once debootstrap is in.
schroot (home:flichtenheld/schroot so far) is a program that allows
very comfortable login into chroots. It takes care of logging into
chroots and for example bind mounting directories to the chroots.
Advanced features include working on snapshots instead of static
chroots. This is very useful for all kinds of chroots, not just Debian
ones. I would like to see this in openSUSE, too, but as a setuid
program, it is probably more difficult to get in.
I'm very grateful for any feedback and help :)

I'm very grateful for any feedback and help :) Sounds *very* interesting. I was looking for a "fakeroot" equivalent for opensuse for cross-building. From the description it seems like schroot could be an even better solution.

Hi Frank, I agree, very interesting! Please keep us informed of the progress (e.g. in the form of a wiki). Best regards, Mischa On Fri, May 11, 2012 at 07:16:08AM +0200, Dieter Werner wrote:
