[opensuse-factory] LXDE: Replace Beaver with Mousepad
Hi. We should replace Beaver, the default (early) advanced editor for LXDE, with Mousepad. Reasons are: * Beaver is unmaintained, Mousepad is actively developed * Beaver is not localized, Mousepad is localized * Beaver seems to broken. For example, if you save a document and you then press any key, program crashes * Both have a similar memory footprint * Both have a similar startup time * Mousepad is as feature rich as Beaver Greetings. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi.
We should replace Beaver, the default (early) advanced editor for LXDE, with Mousepad. Reasons are:
No, we shouldn't. Mousepad does not have any upstream maintainer (Nick just released a snapshot of the repo one and a half years ago) and the version in X11:xfce is an unfinished, unstable development snapshot which I have intentionally not submitted back into Factory. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

And how about geany? Is it unmaintained too? It is still a light alternative. I've been using it in a netbook for a while and it starts fast and works fine. To me it is better than a broken Beaver even if it uses more memory. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, for a GTK-based desktop like LXDE or Xfce geany, leafpad, or gedit should be reasonable choices. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I'd prefer Geany over gedit because it seems to be lighter, starts faster and looks more integrated because it is GTK2 too. Leafpad is the lightest but it has no syntax highlighting and it is very basic. Anyway, I think that Leafpad could be the best alternative because a) It is the lightest and fastest, b) It is the default LXDE editor, and c) it is the smallest in size, which is nice in order to not increase the DVD image size adding Geany. Users can choose their preferred editor for more advanced tasks later. It is really a pity that Mousepad is not maintained because it would be the perfect choice... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
