[opensuse-factory] 12.3 Beta1 - observations
I've just installed 12.3 Beta1 in a VirtualBox VM and have run into a few issues that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen. 1. The VirtualBox guest components all seem to be outdated (result from the last milestone was a 640x480 display only, in Beta1 the GUI doesn't start at all). I worked around it by installing the 4.2.6 guest addons after removing the pre-installed packages (which are version 4.2.4). Could we get the 4.2.6 addons in the release? 1.a. Even with the 4.2.6 OSE addons installed, I cannot get 1280x1024 resolution. That may not be a 12.3-specific issue, but I thought I'd mention that I can only select 1280x960 (along with other "standard" resolutions). 2. When I log out and go to log back in, I never get a password prompt (I select the user, and it moves but then bounces back to selecting the user). If I select "Not listed?" and enter my username, I get the error message "[Invalid UTF-8]" (the username is "jhenderson", so I'm not sure what's invalid about that). 3. I installed GNOME3 as the default desktop, then added the other desktops later, but the login screen doesn't seem to have any place to select the DE. Hi Jim, Same Vitual Box issues here too. Thanks for the tips, I will try them. Actually I had this issue for ~15 days now using Factory. Another possible problem: The time displayed on-screen is one (1) hour before the real time. Checked the time zone (Los Angeles) and it is correct and system clock is set to UTC. I assume that the time zone differential is using an incorrect value. Where would I check/correct that? After re-installing the time shown is now correct. Initial install was to Btrfs formatting, current is back to ext4. Btrfs seems to have some rather strange problems. Hmmm, I could've sworn that when I looked at this on Beta1, it was 4.2.4, but just reinstalled to try to duplicate the issue, and they report as 4.2.6 (maybe 4.2.4 was on M3?). There's an ABI version mismatch message, and unlike M3, beta1 doesn't run the GUI for autoconfig. I still ended up having to remove the pre-installed packages and install the guest addons from Oracle. Jim, thanks for your testing efforts and for spotting this.. subtle issue :) A fixed gdm package is on it's way to GNOME:Factory and from there to openSUSE:Factory... should hopefully not take an eternity. I saw an update from GNOME:Factory today and am pleased to report that gdm now prompts for a password in both use cases. :) The version installed now is gdm-3.6.2-236.1.x86_64.
