[opensuse-factory] Beta 2 and java
Unlike in 10.3, the java environment (etc - eg, acroread) is not automatically installed. However, attempting to install it with Yast results in error message that java and its plugin are not available in the repository (..SL-Factory-non-oss/inst-sources-extra/). What is needed to be done to install java? Those are not Sun Java though. My guess is that we'll have to wait until the release is complete. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Okay, I just checked on my 11.0b2 version. It comes with java 1.6.0_06 from Sun. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Both are based on Sun's source code. The openjdk6 is cca 99% compactible with Sun Java 1.6.0 and many Linux distributions (will) use it - for example Fedora and Ubuntu. We are currently testing it in OBS in Factory. The icedtea is not as much stable as openjdk and Java 7 is still not completed, but Sun released it first. BTW: you should use a new opensuse-java@opensuse.org mailing list for discussing about Java in (open)SUSE Regards Michal Vyskocil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the above, but the real problem as I discovered is that the references to the URLs in 11.0 Software Management are not totally correct. What you need to do is to add 'suse/' to the end of the URLs stated in the Repositories for Factory oss and non-oss (ie, the ends should read '.../suse/'). When you do this java will then install, and as a bonus you will also now be able to have ~400 packages upgraded (398 packages in my case). Yes they are.

You should not have to add suse. There was a glitch in the patterns could explain the problems you had. When you add suse, you will use yum (I think it is) repos instead of yast. Someone else can probably explain the 'drawbacks' of that (I think, but am not sure, that it will download the full repo files everytime you refresh etc)
When you do this java will then install, and as a bonus you will also now be able to have ~400 packages upgraded (398 packages in my case).
Ciao.

What is the entire error message? You may be hitting the bug where libzypp attempts to use the wrong URL to download from the susetags rather than rpmmd repository. If so you could try appending "suse/" to the URL when the download fails, or remove the non-oss repository and add with the /suse/ at the end of the URL. Or it could be another problem entirely. It helps if you provide the actual error message. -- Benjamin Weber --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for this, but I discovered the answer (suse/) late last night after looking at the details of the URLs stated in the Repositories list; but instead of posting my result here I went on to upgrade the packages- bad move as it took over 1 1/2 hours and I ended up going to bed close to 0200 hours :-D . Thanks again.
