[opensuse-factory] RC1 - Question 2: RC1 installed with both KDE3 and KDE4 on same OS
Does anyone have both KDE4 and KDE3 installed on the same system? If you do, does your keyboard and mouse (in my case cordless, optical, Logitec) lock up - ie, simply freeze up - after 1 minute after login and the only way out is the big Red Button? BTW, before and after I installed KDE3 the system was upgraded with some 190 upgrades by YaST2 Online upgrade. (I had KDE4 installed then decided to install KDE3. Everything worked OK (except that I had no sound - see another thread) while the system was running. However, when I shut down and booted up the following day (today) the keyboard/mouse problem kicked in.) I don't have anything cordless installed, but I have both KDE3 and KDE4 installed on all 5 x86_64 (including 2 laptops) and 1 x86 box. Keyboards are either PS/2 or USB attached. All upgraded to 11.0-RC1 and not experiencing any problems with these configurations. Ideally it would be great if you had a second box networked where you could send pings, ssh, etc. to find out if the box is still alive but without those devices not functioning. Don't know if that will releive the need for more head scratching. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Thanks, Sid, I'll now go looking for the reason for the 'freezing'. Further to the above. I had to re-install RC1 -- and I am using the 32-bit version, BTW -- because of the 'freeze'; first I installed KDE4 which went OK (except for a few hassles) and then, a few minutes ago, installed KDE3 as the additional desktop. Sure enough- the keyboard/mouse locked up solid after a minute. Just to clear up any misunderstandings, my cordless/optical Logitech keyboard/mouse *is* USB connected. (See also below.) Now, following your advice, it is the mouse/keyboard which are seem to lock because I can ping the machine from the other computer. Out of curiosity, while the 'freeze' was on, I plugged in a USB flash disc -- and it did not even react to being plugged in, ie the light diode on it did not flash to indicate that the flash disc was being read or recognised as a device. Go one step further, and ssh-in. Log in and kill something. Have a look at top and ps first. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. On some occasions a ping will work, but nothing else. With sshd running "rcsshd start" if it's not started at boot, "ssh
" and see if it responds. That will be proof positive it's keyboard/mouse input loss. I installed both KDE3 and KDE4 at install time on the x86_box and I'm running under KDE3. I can switch to kde4 this evening to see if I get the problem. I just plugged in a USB stick which shows up in dmesg but isn't mounted. yasu:~ # uname -r 2.6.25-26-pae yasu:~ # rpm -qa|grep kde [pruned]
I finally found the time to return to that installation with both KDE4 and KDE3 on it- of course the freeze occurs after about 1 minute. I tried the ssh trick from the other computer and found that it's not just the keyboard/mouse which are locked up - it's the complete OS. Apart from ssh not working, smart was doing the check for upgrades (which it does immediately after login) and this 'froze'; at the same time the clock which displays seconds froze. So, everything freezes. The qualification to all this now has to be is that there have been some 800+ upgrades to 11.0RC1 with KDE4 which couldn't be put through because of the 'freezing' so the problem may have disappeared following the latest upgrades. I re-installed RC1 with KDE4 today and had the 800+ upgrades applied but I am not going to waste my time installing KDE3 just to prove this idea because I am not going to waste close to 3hours on having the upgrades done again if I have to re-install RC1 once more. This probably won't help you. But I had a problem with my computer freezing in Linux and the solution was to turn off all forms of Spread Spectrum, the BIOS Cache, and Fake RAID in the BIOS. Thanks for this but none of these apply in my case. Because having both KDE4 and KDE3 on the same installation was an experiment - and it didn't work - I am going to simply forget about the whole thing :-) .
