[opensuse-factory] 12.1 beta1 with lilo
Hello, I have some troubles using lilo with the kernel kernel-default-3.1.rc7-3.1 that comes with 12.1 beta1. I run into the error: Fatal: Setup length exceeds 31 maximum; kernel setup will overwrite boot loader. When I increase verbose level to maximum I got information that it has 33 sectors, so is bigger then maximum. After some investigation I have found that other Linux distributions have run into this issue and the LILO development teem already corrected in the latest release: New LILO version 23.2 is released Posted by: Joachim Wiedorn Date: 2011-04-15 06:58 Summary:New LILO version 23.2 is released Project:LILO Linux Bootloader This new version now works with very new linux kernels (>= 2.6.36). Added some fixes for source code and manpages. Added new scripts liloconfig and lilo-uuid-diskid as used for Debian. Development Status : 4 - Beta : Environment : Console (Text Based) : Intended Audience : System Administrators : License : BSD License : Operating System : BSD : Linux : Programming Language : Assembly : C : Topic : Init : As we can see the 12.1 beta1 release uses lilo-22.8-66.4 I would kindly ask the responsible maintainer to include the latest lilo release into the upcoming opensuse releases. I am not the maintainer, but I've been trying to get the new lilo to build since July - it doesn't build for SLES_11_SP1 and openSUSE 11.3, which is basically where I am stuck. I received a couple of hints on the packaging list, but either I didn't follow them correctly or they didn't work. http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-packaging/2011-09/msg00142.html -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It only needs to build for Factory for a factory inclusion btw. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks, that sounds good! I was not aware of that. /Per -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have successfully used lilo in openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4 i586 platform, and this is the first time that I run into troubles with it even if I am absolutely aware that openSUSE team prefer grub. I have had earlier a discussion about some backwards compatibility issues in kernel modules - seem we are about to face the same situation with lilo :( It would be very important to come to a common understanding that Opensuse as an open Linux platform might be used in some other way than OpenSuSE install product - where the backwards compatibility is an important factor. I would not break or discourage the innovation and the new development, but I prefer to see backwards compatibility making other depending products life easier. Of course, I am aware that I can myself build, add and use whatever package and version is needed... but it is much more comfortable to have it out of the box... and for the factory or packaging it does not mean considerably more work. Hello, I have noticed that java-1_6_*-sun* is missing from the openSUSE-Addon-NonOss-BiArch-Build0315-BiArch.iso (12.1 beta1) install media. Is this intentional or a just to be done in the future? Thank you. Regards, Z -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
