[opensuse-factory] Anyone willing to test a SuseStudio ext4 rescue boot CD?
All, The developer of ext4magic (a ext4 deleted file recovery tool) has created a simple text based menu'ing front-end. He's used SuseStudio to create a simple rescue CD. You can see some screenshots as well as a link to the downloadable image at: http://openfacts2.berlios.de/wikien/index.php/BerliosProject:Ext4magic-e4m-t... The author made a post about it here: http://developer.berlios.de/forum/forum.php?forum_id=35219 He's looking for feedback if anyone has time to try it out. Thanks Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Do you know if it works on ext3 partitions? I have a destroyed partition, but not an USB of 2 Gigs. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. The test image has full support for ext4 and ext3, only the function for ext3 file carving is a little slow. 1GB USB Stick is too small for this image, greater than 2GB is not a problem. robi (ext4magic developer) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, I saw a mention of ext3 on the suse studio page later.,

I got a 4 GB stick, the smallest I could find in the shop. I'm "burning" it now, and will test it right away on a main partition on which I accidentally erased the entire /var directory. If it works, it will be fantastic :-) And if not, I'm no worse than now. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. There was a grub error at first boot, which dumped me into text mode grub. I selected the entry that seemed appropriate and the system booted - sorry, I did not write it down. Keyboard is a bit of a problem: I have a Spanish layout, and the system use US keyboard. I don't know how to change that. I don't know how to start the rescue system, the text displayed does not say that, as far as I can see. Luckily I have another machine, a laptop, which I booted to find out, and write this. The program is nice. Partition list does not show labels or other data to identify them, but I can do that on another terminal. It is an ext3 partition, the program warns about that. I'm using mode 2, it is busily exploring and restoring data: it looks very promising. Wow! I may survive the disaster much more easily than I thought possible. I'll keep my fingers crossed :-) Now it is writing to a directory named MAGIC-2 :-? Dunno what is that. Perhaps orphaned files. This part is taking a long time... I'll take a nap :-) [...] Still running... I miss an estimate at least of percent done. I also miss "mc" so that I can easily have a look at what it is producing. I'll go out shopping. It ran for 4.5 hours, on an ext3, 21GiB partition. The recovery is far from complete: it did recover many things, true, but many files are lost. For example, it did not recover the rpm database (/var/lib/rpm) or the mysql database (/var/lib/rpm/mysql). It is not enough. I have to dump it all and go back to the previous backup, which although too old, is complete. Pity. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. No such tool can ever substituted a good backup. This is only a last chance to recover some important files. The files in /var is not the easiest part. Multimedia files, pictures, documents and archives files are easier to recover and the result is often better. But even there is always something lost and the result is depending on a lot of circumstance. This test image based only on a clon of a simple boot disk.
It is an ext3 partition, the program warns about that. Only indicative, for ext3 the alternative old ext4magic-0.2.4 is used. Default and for ext4 a ext4magic-0.3.0
Now it is writing to a directory named MAGIC-2 :-? Dunno what is that. Perhaps orphaned files. This part is taking a long time... I'll take a nap :-)
MAGIC-2: The name for these files could not be determined. You will get a summary statement at the end of the recovery.
Still running... I miss an estimate at least of percent done. I also miss "mc" so that I can easily have a look at what it is producing.
I'll go out shopping.

This is the slow function for the ext3 file carving. ;-) Especially text files and many small files take a long time here. Often some hours. For ext4 this function is faster, smarter and more accurate. A progress bar at this position is very difficult to develop and not very meaningful. The files recovered at intervals and very uneven. robi (ext4magic developer) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Alternatively, a method to select it after boot, and saved to the usb stick, would be acceptable.

Yes, I saw it. I took a photo, because I did not see a log of it.

I have the intention to migrate that partition to ext4 when all this finishes.
