[opensuse-factory] No Internet since Update M7 -> M8
Hi all, yesterday i've made an update to M8 by "zypper dup". Maybe two weeks ago i've done a installation of M7 from scratch with the network-installation CD and since then i had updated it from time to time by "zypper up". Last time maybe 4 days ago. So, since yesterday i have trouble with my internet connection from this machine. This machine is a toshiba notebook with intel 3945 wlan, and it should have a connection to a fritzbox 3270, address is given by dhcp from the fritzbox. Security option is WPA2. Fact is, the notebook does have a connection to the fritzbox, it is getting an IP-address, but the name resolution into the internet isnt working. I CAN reach my other machines by IP and also by name (this is the reason why i can write this mail). route says (while connected via eth0): Kernel IP Routentabelle Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1 0 0 eth0 default 192.168.1.254 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 What i've done so far: - switched from wireless to cable (eth0) to the same router: no effect. - switched from Networkmanager to ifup-method: no effect. - switched from dhcp to manual addressing: no effect. - deleted ~/.kde4/apps/networkmanagment and ~/.kde4/config/networkmanagmentrc: no effect. - deleted the complete folder ~/.kde4: no effect. Try renaming /etc/resolv.conf - restart networkmanager / or reboot and see if that makes a diff. I hit the same snag, and after playing around with resolv.conf and yast2 networking I got dns back to a working state. works like a charm, thank you. /etc/resolv.conf was new, timestamp from today, but completely empty. When this kind of problem occurs, I find it helpful to do something akin to triage. (1) See if the network is working by pinging the gateway. (2) Ping some network location using its IP number. My choice is 216.83.154.106 (www.samba.org). (3) Finally ping by name. If all 3 work, but some application does not, the problem is with the application. If 1 and 2 work, but not 3, it is a nameserver problem. I had the same problem updating from milestone 8 to the Oct 07 build I was able to get into my routers. This time the solution is a lot simpler than reinstalling :) Just add nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf. That worked some time ago when there was no netconfig script that will not update resolv.conf when any other application/user changes that file. There is couple of bug reports that deal with that problem.

And some time after, when you try to connect to some other network with different nameserver you will discover that DHCP doesn't work again. The /sbin/netconfig will refuse to update resolv.conf if it is changed. It will store new resolv.conf in resolv.conf.netconfig, ready to be used, but invisible to the rest of network subsystem. That is done to protect user changes to be overwritten and lost, but that doesn't work well when user, or some application, that is not aware of netconfig role in openSUSE, changes resolve.conf and effectively disables netconfig from that moment on. After reading your mail i had a look at /etc/resolv.*, and you're right, there is a /etc/resolv.conf.netconfig, which has all the stuff it needs to work. But i did not edit the old resolv.conf at any time since M7 was installed. That is why stated "if resolv.conf is changed", as it is irrelevant who changed it. The netconfig will check md5sum and refuse to update resolv.conf. There is no need to reboot or run "rcnetwork restart" as the resolv.conf is read dynamically. Hi, for me occured a strange reaction after M7 > M8 My wlan connection with Ifup failed but nwm worked. I have to search why this occures or if something missing. Any ideas? Daniel
