[opensuse-factory] Using ntfs-3g for /sbin/mount.ntfs
Hi, I'm updating the ntfs-3g package, and I wonder if it's fine to do ln -s /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g /sbin/mount.ntfs This should help fix various issues with NTFS auto-mounting (in addition to the hal .fdi file). Upstream mentions this fix is okay, and other distributions do the same. As far as I know, no other package in openSUSE ships /sbin/mount.ntfs, so there wouldn't be any conflict. I'd just like to check that it's fine to do so :-) Thanks, Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You might consider to set the sym link only if /sbin/mount.ntfs doesn't exist. Or to use update-alternatives. Even if there currently are none. Using update-alternatives might be the best approach being prepare for any unknown change in the future. What's the intended use of update-alternatives? I have only seen it used to repair java :-? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. What's the intended use of update-alternatives?
To maintain symbolic links determining default commands. As an example see the vim packages. /usr/bin/vi points to /bin/vim, /bin/vim to /etc/alternatives/vim, /etc/alternatives/vim for example to /bin/vim-normal. With update-alternatives you're able to define priorities and you're able to overwrite them. In the vim case this might allow the vendor to setup a useful default depending on the installed packages (vim-base, gvim) while the user is still able to overwrite it. In he case vim-base and gvim are installed try "update-alternatives --config vim". For further details see the man page. The origin is Debian. But nowadays it's used by the majority of Linux verndors. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany

Not that good if another package appears and has such a file, which is why I agree with your other comment:

Oh, didn't know we had update-alternatives. Sounds good. Except that I can't find any documentation about how to create a package using it :-) Any pointer for this? (we can continue this thread on opensuse-packaging for this part of the discussion) Note that my question was more like: can it break something to use ntfs-3g for /sbin/mount.ntfs? I only know about the included man page.

I'm not aware of. I would add it wihtout further discussion. Lars -- Lars Müller [ˈlaː(r)z ˈmʏlɐ] Samba Team SUSE Linux, Maxfeldstraße 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany
