[opensuse-factory] confused by lvm / pvcreate in milestone 7
All, I'm running a pure milestone 7 distro. (But I self compiled the kernel from the kernel-source package). I have created partition /dev/sda7 to test lvm. # fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x001e001e Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 2598 20868403+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 * 2599 2859 2096482+ 83 Linux /dev/sda3 2860 9729 55183275 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 2860 3120 2096451 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda6 3121 6384 26218048+ 83 Linux /dev/sda7 6385 9729 26868681 8e Linux LVM But when I try to add /dev/sda7 to lvm, I get an error: # pvcreate /dev/sda7 Device /dev/sda7 not found (or ignored by filtering). I have not modified /etc/lvm/lvm.conf from default, so the filter should be the default one and I assume that should allow /dev/sda7 to be used. Does anyone know why this is failing? No, but you might try creating the lvm with yast disk. I had no problems when I originally created mine and I used yast as I was quite unfamiliar with lvm and the command-line actions. Interesting "yast2 partitioner" is reporting "The partitioning on /dev/sda is unreadable ... by parted. ..." Yet parted -l is having no problem. # parted -l Model: ATA ST980815A (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 80.0GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: msdos Number Start End Size Type File system Flags 1 32.3kB 21.4GB 21.4GB primary ntfs type=07 2 21.4GB 23.5GB 2147MB primary ext2 boot, type=83 3 23.5GB 80.0GB 56.5GB extended lba, type=0f 5 23.5GB 25.7GB 2147MB logical linux-swap(v1) type=82 6 25.7GB 52.5GB 26.8GB logical ext3 type=83 7 52.5GB 80.0GB 27.5GB logical lvm, type=8e So I now have two tools that are having unexpected troubles. well, parted does not read my lvm and fdisk -l reports it: Disk /dev/dm-0: 536.9 GB, 536870912000 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 65270 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Disk /dev/dm-0 doesn't contain a valid partition table how did you create the partition /dev/sda7? and it is already "lvm" ?? how did you create the partition /dev/sda7?
I used fdisk from the cli.
and it is already "lvm" ??
I set the partition type to 8e, which is the value for lvm.
(the large size of mine is for photographs :^)
I'm just experimenting / testing. I don't even know what I will put on the volume. I'm trying to test / hack on a project that uses lvm volumes / pvs Okay, this is crazy. I deleted sda7 via fdisk. Then I relaunched yast partitioner and it worked. This time I created 3 partitions to test with. I then went back to the command line and pvcreate worked! That makes no sense to me, but I'm not sure if this is a bug of some sort or not. Anyway, I'm moving forward with my other testing unless someone asks me to do something on this thread.
