[opensuse-factory] Requested backport patch from kernel 4.6 to 4.4 upstream addressing unnecessary throttling of cpus on Lenovo laptops
Hi all, I've submitted a backport from 4.6 to 4.4 upstream on kernel.bugzilla.org for openSUSE 42.2's kernel 4.4. This patch fixes a bogus passive trip point that is 0 degree Celsius. The thermal zone fails to set cooling devices to their proper cooling states. The processors are always throttled on Lenovo laptops because the current temperature is always higher than the passive trip point 0 degrees C. Lenovo laptop users have been complaining about fans running for a long time for no reason. I thought that this was a reasonable request. See: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118891 Cheers! Two days ago, I was reading about what was added to kernel 4.6 such as the bug fix for the throttling problem with Lenovo laptops. Yesterday Richard notified us that kernel 4.4 will be the LTS kernel for 42.2 and I wanted to make sure that this patch was backported. I was informed that backports need to be requested upstream so I requested it. In the future, should I request this on the openSUSE bugzilla? Too bad we could not use 4.6 for openSUSE 42.2. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Right, but this one was backported to 4.4 in April already.
In the future, should I request this on the openSUSE bugzilla?
Nope, sending an e-mail to stable@vger.kernel.org is the fastest way to do it.
Too bad we could not use 4.6 for openSUSE 42.2.
It does not matter much. There will always be bugfixes in later releases. Like in 4.7 for 4.6. thanks, -- js suse labs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Perfect. I no longer need to do requests on kernel.bugzilla.org. Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
