[opensuse-factory] cups an sane in 11.0
Hallo, I ve to plan a migration of a cups and sane server (suse 10.1). My idea is to wait until the summer-hollidays here in germany and to make the big jump to 11.0. My questions: What are the big changes for cups and sane in 11.0? i.A. Printing Legacy Encoded Text Files
The printing system based on CUPS 1.3.x (Common UNIX Printing System)
no longer converts legacy encoded text files such as ISO-8859-1,
windows-1252, and Asian encodings on its own. Only UTF-8 and thus
ASCII is supported.
As a work-around to print legacy encoded text files, convert before
sending them to the CUPS server. To print an ISO-8859-1 text file,
use:
iconv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf-8 filename.txt | lp -d printer
Note, printing of PDF or PS or such binary files (JPEG, PNG, etc.)
works as before.

Luiz

You will have to re-configure all printers, see the release notes from 10.2 (IIRC). I don't know if there are major changes in sane, but at least I'm using the same config in 10.3 that I used for years ;-) In general, you should check the release notes of the distributions you skip (10.2, 10.3) and those from 11.0 of course. "Old" release notes are available via http://en.opensuse.org/Release_Notes Regards, Christian Boltz --

Please keep in mind that SUSE already announced: security updates for openSUSE 10.1 (but not SLE10 product family) will no longer made. For a detailed list of changes in CUPS, install a beta of openSUSE 11.0, and have a look at the files: file:/usr/share/doc/packages/cups/CHANGES-1.1.txt file:/usr/share/doc/packages/cups/CHANGES-1.2.txt file:/usr/share/doc/packages/cups/CHANGES.txt For a rough overview of CUPS, you might want to have a look at: http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.2/whatsnew.html http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.3/whatsnew.html As your signature indicates that you might have a business interest in SUSE Linux products, I encourage you to think about buying a SUSE Linux enterprise product. Hello, opensuse-factory is the wrong list for such questions because this list is for "Discussion about all Alpha, Beta, RC and Factory versions of openSUSE", see http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate/Mailinglists Use opensuse@opensuse.org instead. Regarding SANE: Nothing very important. Only the usual never-ending udev/HAL/hal-resmgr changes for each version but this should be set up correctly if you install openSUSE 11.0 from scratch (to make it 100% sure to have all the new stuff and nothing old left by accident, e.g. an old udev or HAL config file with outdated syntax) and then set up the scanner(s) anew with YaST. By the way, have a look at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=347943 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340173 Regarding CUPS: There are backward incompatibilities from CUPS 1.1 to 1.3, see http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell ----------------------------------------------------------------- Up to SUSE LINUX 10.1 we provided CUPS 1.1 and since openSUSE 10.2 we provide CUPS 1.2 which is not fully backward compatible with CUPS 1.1. Therefore in case of an update it is recommended not to use an outdated cupsd.conf from a CUPS 1.1 installation before but to start from scratch with the original cupsd.conf from our CUPS 1.2 RPM. For example RunAsUser is no longer supported ... Additionally by default cupsd in CUPS 1.2 listens only on internal ("localhost") network interfaces ----------------------------------------------------------------- and in particular for CUPS 1.3 see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=387130 and follow the links therein.
