[opensuse-factory] Leap 15.0 on Dell Inspiron 13 7380 - an Experience Report
Hi, I'd like to share my openSUSE Leap 15.0 experience with a brand new laptop with Whiskey Lake CPU.
https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/new-inspiron...
Conclusion: Works pretty well with some problems and required hacks. BIOS check: * comes configured with UEFI and secure boot * internal M.2 NVMe SSD is configured for Intel RST RAID (IDIOTS!) * not latest BIOS 1.1.0, update to 1.2.1 is easy: - put the Inspiron_7380_7580_1.2.1.exe to a vfat USB stick partition - power on, F12, "BIOS Flash Update", select the file Problems: * Pre-installed Dell OEM Windows 10 home x64 is crap [it uses Intel RST (FW based RAID) although no second NVMe device is available for RAID-1] * Dell OEM Windows 10 recovery image is also crap [only encrypted install.esd image with auto-installation] * dual-boot not possible without a big hack [M.2 SSD not detected on Leap 15.0 due to SATA operation set to iRST RAID and not AHCI in BIOS] * ELAN 0c01 fingerprint reader not supported on Leap 15.0 [fprintd finds no HW, requires special libfprint from https://github.com/iafilatov/libfprint] * extreme system fan noise under heavy CPU load [steps fan off, 3300 and 4200 RPM are okay, 5100, 5900, and 6600 RPM should be avoided with people closer than 20m] Hacks: * latest kernel from Leap 15.0 updates on installation ISO [commit "drm/i915/whl: Introducing Whiskey Lake platform (FATE#322643)."] * BIOS: SATA Operation: Change from "RAID" to "AHCI" [for detection of internal M.2 NVMe SSD on Leap 15.0] * install Leap 15.0 with updates and throw away all Windows stuff * read the Windows 10 product key from ACPI table MSDM [sudo xxd /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM] * download the related Windows 10 ISO e.g. from computerbild.de * install Windows 10 to QEMU/KVM VM with Dell OEM product key read from ACPI [I need Windows to update a TomTom navi and for a Canon scanner - works with USB redirection] * don't try to use the fingerprint reader - not working * system fan is getting less annoying once all updates are installed but kernel compile is still pretty noisy at 6600 RPM and all cores at 2.2 GHz - powertop output looks good when idle I hope this helps others to save some time. Hi Sebastian, thanks for the report. Just two remarks you didn't talk about the screen is it HiDPI ? I guess no, otherwise you would have talk about the unreadable smally fonts in firt install step ;-) Second, you will be able to use the uefi partition to put your next Dell bios exe on and can update from there directly (no more usb key needed). -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch Bareos Partner, openSUSE Member, fsfe supporter GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, I got the FHD display. I've been working on enough SLED L3 incidents about 4K display and e.g. a location issue of the sle-classic bottom panel when setting the text font scaling factor to 2x in GNOME. So I already knew that those may cause issues.

Thanks for that hint! I see, it looks at /boot/efi. Very much appreciated. It is definitely better than on my work laptop Lenovo ThinkPad X250 where it is only possible to update the BIOS from a dual-boot Windows. New colleagues get Dell Latitude laptops instead. 15.1 is supposed to improve the out of the box HiDPY experience on the installer as well as the main desktops. YaST should already scale up automatically. A fix for grub is on the way and should be in one of the next 15.1 builds. GNOME should also scale up IMO. In any case, feedback on HiDPY support in 15.1 appreciated. Don't hesitate to file bugs if it doesn't work properly. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.com/ SUSE Linux GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Ludwig,

I have quite some HiDPI devices available. How would be the best and fastest way to test 15.1 to give you guys feedback? Is there an ISO anywhere around? Just follow the links on software.opensuse.org :-) The snapshot announcer will announce new builds on this list soon which will also contain a link to the test plan. In general bugs should be reported via bugzilla. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.com/ SUSE Linux GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Dang, seems like "openSUSE Testing" was too obvious... M) Thanks both to you and Knurpht. vinz. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Added to: https://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Dell_laptops#Inspiron_7xxx I noticed two more things not working: 1. Suspend to RAM 2. rfkill key Details: 1. system crashes at wake-up from S4, reboots itself 2. "rfkill block all; sleep 20; rfkill unblock all" working, seems to be a keyboard input issue Will debug, file bugs, and develop custom fixes as needed. I noticed two more things not working:
1. Suspend to RAM 2. rfkill key
Suspend to RAM is suddenly working since disabling SecureBoot in BIOS. Looks like a BIOS bug. The rfkill key is not working as the dell_laptop driver emits KEY_RFKILL but that key is not mapped in xkeyboard-config. Upstream patch works. Aha, that's interesting. BTW, did you mean S3 in the description below?

Yes, I meant S3. Sorry. I looked at the wrong lines in the journal. The system should wake up but the Dell BIOS logo is the first thing visible and rebooting the system. Will analyze further.
