[opensuse-factory] PHP package naming
Dear all, php packages are currently prefixed tith "php5-"; isn't it time to replace that by "php-", as php4 is not supported anymore for a long time and php7 is coming at the end of the year [1]? We still could "provide" the php5- namings, but I think those "5" should slowly be removed from the package names. -1 ! No, lets keep the name php5 for any and all php packages that need or are based of the php version 5.x.x, much less of a shitstorm when php7 comes around, and it will happen, as you already noted. That way you package a php tool, lets say a database connector for php5 and php7 without package-name conflicts, and keep in mind, much of the userbase are not that observant when it comes to installing something. A package-name that includes the major php version is much more helpful (think support, user-forums, etc) than most devs give that credit for. Or, are you volunteering to finace the extra work just to move from php5-* to php-* in the package names? Happy paying! IMHO php7 based packages should start with php7-* just to make it beyond obvios for what php version they are packaged. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Whether one can mix mod_php5 and mod_php7 remains open, but at least for the CLI part (which can be run in (F)CGI mode!), some may want to be able to parallel install the two generations — at which point you need non-overlapping package names, and half of it is already there so to say, so you do not want to make it harder. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
