[opensuse-factory] Discussion about starting BETA process earlier - by end of sep 2006
Hi all ! I would like to ask to start the BETA process of openSUSE 10.2 earlier. Alpha4 now is stable enough to be almost BETA - a few fixes here and there and we are BETA-ready. I think it is not-needed to waste another month of time to get to Alpha5 and then BETA1. I suggest, that, because we have almost-stable distro now, start the BETA process by end of this month (Sep, 2006), instead of end of next month, and make feature freeze earlier. So our BETA process will last 1 month longer, and in the end deadline (Dec,2006) we (Novell+Community) will be able to deliver a better and more stable OS for day-to-day use. I want openSUSE 10.2 to be better tested than previous OSes: SUSE Linux 10.0 and 10.1. What do you think? -Alexey Eremenko, Linux community member. -8.sep.2006. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

As I said earlier. Being faster then the schedule does not mean you have to cut the schedule but that there is an opportunity to test thing "die hard" and fix also the smallest bugs/annoyings. Maybe openSUSE-project can even do some extra wishes if there is so much time left. But I seems that 10.2 is right on schedule. Bet never laugh too fast, sometimes it backfires. /me is gonna install alpha4 now. History shows that the developers started to break the distro around Beta ... ;) (Well history changed a bit, but I think we should just keep to the schedule.) Beta phase will start when the distro is feature complete. As for now, we are still adding features. So adding and completing features is a waste of time? Thanks for the laugh. Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It is NOT waste of time, but having more stable community OS *is* more important than having 2 or 3 extra features in. The features that are half-developed and unstable can be included in separate repository, after the OS release so you still be able to use them at your own risk. Pushing half-developed features into OS results in SUSE Linux 10.1 - both late and unstable OS. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

And what is your _rush_ to get 10.2 released earlier? IIANM the schedule for a new release is now 9 months, instead of the 6 months that was in places for prior versions, so that more testing and bug fixing can take place (which is a good thing). He doesn't want to release earlier, he just wants complete feature freeze to be now instead of 1½ month from now. I'm however also in favour of sticking with the current roadmap. There's no need to worry so much. I'm sure AJ will let us have an extra beta or RC if it's needed at the time. And I expect 10.2 to be plenty stable if the current roadmap is followed and current feature freeze is respected. SUSE is supposed to be stable and well tested, yes, but it's not supposed to be Debian Stable. If something needs more time to become stable then move back the release date but do not call for an immediate feature freeze which invalidates hundred people's current work and postpones their work to an autumn 2007 release.

I guess you have no imagination how integrated most of the features are. You cannot put those "simply into a separate repository".
Pushing half-developed features into OS results in SUSE Linux 10.1 - both late and unstable OS.
The problem of 10.1 was that long time planned freezes were not ahered to, not that its feature freeze was not pulled forward. Making the Beta phase longer at the expense of the Alpha phase is definitely NOT a way to go. Most of developers still don't have their features implemented according to the current plan. Shortening their time now could discourage them. I'd even vote for more Alpha releases or rather shortening the period between them. Maybe it would help more if people were better informed about new features in the 'current' release and they were asked to test them deeply. Given that I found 2 bugs during installation and another 3 in Gnome within 2 minutes of first logging on today, I think the extra time for the Alpha process could be well used. And with the dependency errors I came up with during the install, I have some "unpicking" to do before I can get any updated packages from factory... I don't think so, in fact I would suggest to the reverse, a longer alpha process or a more betas, quality is far more important that the schedule.
