Of course it is. You aren't using the "nvidia" but the standard "nv" driver in xconf. Download the latest 177.82 driver from nVidia and compile it against the kernel you are using. sorry, cannot help you here. If you want to prove/disprove the glx statement I made, run "switchtonv" and restart x. You are right, Patrick, that the glxgears cannot be used with the "nv" driver. At least I cannot reproduce this working combination at this time. I qualify the above by stating that I am almost damn positive that I have been able to run glxgears with the nv driver being specified in xorg.conf recently: I ran glxgears only to find that my fps were in the 150+fps range which is not what the reading should be. I then edited xorg.conf to use "nvidia" driver, re-ran glxgears and the stats. came up to what they ought to be (for my video card etc.). Why are you handicapping yourself by using onboard Intel stuff, for god's sake?! My mb uses some built-in chip but I wouldn't trust it less than I trust the banks and the government. If you want performance then using a card, specifically designed for the job, is what I have always used. Heck, you wouldn't want a handy-man to service the automatic transmission on your car? I get over 10,000 FPS in 10.3 and over 9,000 FPS in 11.0. There is something wrong with the Graphics subsystem.
Fred, I think it's KDE4. I loaded KDE3 tonight on the same box and just on a whim, in KDE3: 01:08 arete~> glxgears 31248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6237.533 FPS 30700 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6139.998 FPS 29088 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5817.566 FPS 28206 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5595.628 FPS 28717 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5740.827 FPS 27854 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5570.760 FPS 28236 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5647.170 FPS 29807 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5953.829 FPS 29799 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5956.565 FPS 29687 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5930.866 FPS -- David C. After some more testing, it's obvious that the "slowness" and locking up of the 11.1b5 KDE 4.1 desktop is either the Intel video driver or problems in "x"....I suspect the later.

As in my 11.1B5 review post, I can't put my finger on the problem, but I notice it. Especially when working with KDE control center. I assumed the subsystem, being "x" because there are the same problems on systems with other video than Intel.
Fred
I have an nvidia 8800GT and I saw it with the fbdev (frame buffer), nv and nvidia drivers. I still see it with the graphics system fully configured and the graphics performance under 11.1 is 50% what it is under 11.0 kde3. On 11.1 Beta 5 I get:
21:13 arete~> glxgears 20919 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4183.754 FPS 22198 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4439.556 FPS 21181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4236.142 FPS

This issue may very well be a KDE4 issue. I decided to load KDE3 tonight to triage the jilted system and, on a lark, recalled the glxgears issue so I decided to test with glxgears. The differences were startling to say the least. All I did was install KDE3 on the exact same machine and log into KDE3 and then start glxgears; I was shocked at the differences in the frame rates for the same hardware and with the desktop being the only difference. The KDE4 numbers are above. Now,here are the frame rates from KDE3: 01:08 arete~> glxgears 31248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6237.533 FPS 30700 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6139.998 FPS 29088 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5817.566 FPS 29807 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5953.829 FPS 29799 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5956.565 FPS 29687 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5930.866 FPS A full 30+% faster than the frame rates seen under KDE4 -- David C.
