[opensuse-factory] OpenSUSE 10.2 beta1 netinst CD install problems with VMWare
Hello all, I was attempting to install OpenSUSE 10.2 beta1 as a guest OS under VMWare (under Windows XP) using the NetInst image. Initial boot was fine, but shortly into the install processes, I'd get and error dialog to the effect of "make sure CD 1 is in the drive". Changing to another console window, I was able to confirm that the image could be mounted - so I'm assuming the problem lies with either how the CD represented itself, or the CD# detection code. After several retries, I gave up, and started downloading with the 'standard' CDs (CD1, CD2, CD3, etc). Everything is going fine so far - they just take a lot longer to download (I'm up to CD 4). Hope this helps, Mark

Where did you point the installer to install from? FTP? HTTP? URL please. Best, Christoph --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
Hello, I didn't get that far. I ran into this right after the language selection screen. /Mark

I'm having the same problem as Mark. I downloaded the image directly from the openSUSE site, burned the image with K3b (onto three different CDs) with the intent of installing the beta on a portable HD. The CD booted properly, but when I clicked Installation, the screen came up, and some time later I got the "Make sure CD1 is in the drive" message. Clicking OK brought the message up again; clicking Back brought up the keyboard language dialog, then the install menu. Just for kicks, I tried the CD-check from the menu and it recognized the CD and pronounced it healthy. But the install would not proceed. All thoughts appreciated. I've had the same issues in the past using the Windows version of
VMware Server. Try copying the contents of the DVD to a smb (windows)
share, download the netinstall CD and start the install. On the
initial boot screen (right after all the 'Welcomes" don't forget to
press F3 and then F4 to select from where the installation sources
are. Either SMB or FTP. The 2 faster ftp sites I've found are:
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source
ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source
However I would recommend getting the remastered DVD and copying it to
a SMB share because this has all the patches already applied.
